V8 Won't turn over when hot

Hi I've got a 1969 V8 auto, for the last few weeks I've had a problem with starting it when hot. It will turn over and fire up perfectly when cold, I've run it up in the garden and it will still start turn over and start when it's hot. I've just taken it out and had a brief run around the block and tried to start it again on the drive and nothing! When I take it out on a run, stop it and try to restart then it's no go! I get a very slight click (not the usual loud loose battery terminal type) and the ignition light dims. If I leave it half an hour or so it usually turns over and starts straight away ( I called the AA first time as I was in suit and tie, by the time he arrived it started on the button!) It has let me down a few times now but usually restarts when I go back to it. I've read through the threads on here and tried the obvious things like the connections to the starter but am now stuck! Any ideas please would be gratefully received.

It sounds like the solenoid on the starter motor is sticking. When hot this is more likely to occur. You can tap the soldenoid with a hammer or use a piece of wood instead, just don't belt it too hard.

If this works, you have found the problem.

Lets know how you go!

Ron,

Thanks for that, just been out for another run and then parked up on the driveway, no go! I got out and gave the soleneod a tap with my Birmingham screwdriver and it's freed it off, fires up like a dream!

Just got to get it fixed and I'm away.

Thanks for your help.

Carl
