Vacuum advance and retard

Some time ago I asked a retired mechanic to check the ignition on my 3500s. Using a vacuum pump and a pressure guage, he said that the diaphragm on the unit had a hole in it and did not work. I suspect it had been like this for a long time. I understand they are still available but when I checked the 1977 edition of the P6v8 Parts Catalogue I found that there were six different versions for six different distributors! And for good measure the number on my distributor did not match any of those listed but it was very close. At present the vehicle goes well but I would still like to have it properly tuned as I understand when working properly, fuel economy is improved. I have heard you can get the original reconditioned, namely fitting a new diaphragm. Could any of our NZ contributors in CHCH or Aucland (or even Ron in NSW) advise me on this one? I live in Taradale, Hawkes Bay.
Thanks
P.S. The vehicle has just completed its first 100,000 km.

Hello Classicus,

Unfortunately I don't have any experience when it comes to using vacuum advance modules which have been reconditioned, so I am unable to comment on their relative success or not as the case may be.

What I can say is that today only one Lucas OEM vacuum advance / retard module is available, and it replaces all previous modules as they appeared on the various Lucas distributors as fitted to Rover V8 engines.

Ron.
