Valve Stem Seals - Does the V8 have them

Just in the middle of cleaning up the donor SD1 heads, these had already been stripped before I got them.

I have never seen an engine so bad for dirt, really thick black carbon and blocked oil feeds ! - Having said that the heads are un damaged and valve guides/valves seem to be OK

Having had a quick look in the repair manual, I can't see any mention of valve stem seals - does the V8 not have them ?, haven't come across and engine without them before.

Hi John. I did mine and there weren't any fitted. I think it's because the heads sit at an angle allowing the oil to drain away quickly so to not need them. Hope this helps.

The Rover V8 heads did not have valve stem seals fitted until 1993, when they first appeared on the 3.9 and 4.2 litre engines. All engines from then on had them fitted.

However, it is my understanding that they have a tendancy to come off with use, so many engines were built post 1993 without the valve stem seals fitted.

Have a look at rimmer Brothers web site.

They list them for the sd1. but it is for inlet only.
