I have a 1973 V8 Auto which has resently started to have fuel vapourisation problem when hot.
What can I do to overcome this?
Do I need to change to an electric pump? If so how is this done!
It apperas that the fuel disappears from the plastic pipe coming from the fuel pump when the problem occurs.
Your advice is welcomed

hi rogers,
if it is definately fuel vaporisation and not a weak mechanical pump or blocked fuel line then fitting an electric fuel pump is a good idea. ideally it should be mounted at the back as the facet fuel pump you should use are push pumps rather than pull. ie if you mount it in the engine bay it has to pull the fuel all the way from the back of the car. the only drawback is you will lose the use of your reserve as there are three pipes running from the rear to front of your car, one is the main feed, the second is the reserve line and the third is the return fuel line. most people mount them in the engine bay to keep the reserve line operable. cars fitted with air-con overcame this problem by having a different set up at the rear and the reserve cable running through to the rear to operate the reserve line. hope this helps.

With regard to fitting an electric pump and keeping a reserve, I did the following:
I fitted 2 pumps at the rear one fed from the main line and one from the reserve, the outputs were connected via a T piece and fed through the main line to the carbs bypassing the old reserve tap. I left the old reserve tap in place and fitted a choke warning switch to the reserve cable so when pulled it activated a change over relay which switched pumps. A bit OTT I guess but I kept reserve and the reserve pull works as original.
