a question i have no idea of the answer to so i know you lot out there will
is work carried out by a garage under any sort of warrenty??
i ask because my mums astra recently had a head gasket done and now 7 weeks later its totally buggered the engine
is there any comeback on the garage??
would you have to prove poor workmanship? etc
it had only done 44000 miles on an 'x' plate.
oh well, any thoughts welcome!
cheers ,jules

ASk them nicely and if they dont play ball phone trading standards. THey're usually helpful.

Rich.

I guess you'd have to establish that the work they've done is the cause of the engine problem.

I have to say having worked in the trade a little, and having been in the computer business for years, customers do tend to take a "you were the last to touch it" attitude, I've been blamed for a failed printer even though I only over saw the main PC unit !

Obviously I'm not saying this applies in this case !

It also depends on what exactly has gone wrong with the engine. If they've fitted the wrong head gasket, then yes.

But why had the head gasket failed after only 44,000 miles anyway? Shouldn't happen.. Was the work done by the dealership, or an independent garage?

If you're in the AA or RAC they may help
You'll need an expert's opinion - the cause of the engine dying will have to be linked to the head gasket being changed .If for example the radiator sprung a leak , you'd have little chance.
If the cambelt has gone , could be a different matter - I'm sure an expert would say to never reuse a cambelt
