What holds the front springs in?

I want to take the suspension legs out next week so I can have the ball joints replaced.
I've taken one leg off before, and the top link stayed where it was, but I'm not sure if that's because the ARB braced it against the other side.
Can I take both legs off at the same time and still leave the springs in? Is the damper (and its lower pin) strong enough to take the force of the spring on its own? Or will I need to take the springs out to be safe?

As you surmise, the damper acts as the stop. It’s strong enough.
