What's that noise? - A mystery!

It's a very quiet week-end are you all away with your Rovers?

This 'er Rover of mine has a sort of rattle that's sounds as though its up at the front.
The charging indicator looked to be fluctuating a bit and it sounded as though the alternator bearing was going. I've had it changed. Good deal with new Lucas without removing any other parts. ( Be careul though as the connector is at a slightly differnt angle and the cable can rest on the manifold with unfortunate consequences...)

Can the chains sound like this?
There is a little play on the water pump but could that sound like a baffle?
I need someone with a good ear and perhaps a piece of wood to act like a doctors' stethoscope. I am not sure if the sound is less a faster speeds. It does not go away when I rev the engine. ???
PS For the Webmaster.. Tonight as I go back to alter a mistake, it won't let me do it without cancelling the following letters. I sometimes find this on Word as well.

Come on Doctors Peter, Arthuy etc.
Am I going to have to throw even more money at it or are you waiting for me to ask for bids?

Remember I am still young and innocent at this game. You wouldn't want me to be taken for a ride by some unscrupulous, non Rover Owners Club person out there.

Blimey - a sort of rattle you think sounds like it's coming from the front - well that narrows it down to 250 moving parts! :)
Can't help an awful lot except to say the recent rattle, grating sort of rubbing noise I had on my V8 (definitely coming from the front) was indeed my water pump. There was a little bit of play in it, it didn't go away with speed and gradually got worse over a month or so.
As far as I'm aware there shouldn't ever be any play in this particualr bit unless the bearings have gone are about to leave! I got myself a nice new shiny one from Mr. Wadham and had it fitted all for under £80 and my rattle was gone.
Not sure what the other 249 noises or rattles would be - or sound like...

I tend to agree with p6steve it could be your water pump having had the same problem some years ago, also with you saying you have renewed the alternator recently. The fan belt may have been tightened up to hide the alternator fault hence damaging the bearings in the water pump.Which will now be noticed on renewal of the alternator. gary

:)
I do appreciate you help guys.I will try your remedy.

It does remind me of my young single days in Traffic with my P6 3500S. We were in and out of the local hospitals dealing with accidents and I much preferred the diagnosis of the Staff Nurses then to the Doctors. Much more rewarding!

p.s. The auto electrician did scorch a cable on changing the alternator but he admitted it and replaced that wire ( it happened to be the spare ) back to the fuse box. If he hadn't admitted it I would never have noticed as it is inside the loom and all using the existing cable ties carefuuly opened not to break them. He only charged me £70 for the inconvenience...

Hi Ash,

just as the boys say the pump shouldn't be loose.

Have a good look in daylight. You will have probably have done this but, with the engine running look for anything moving as it shouldn't. give it a little bit of gas at the carbs and look for anything odd. try and pin point it with your ear.

Is the engine vibrating more than usual? Whilst you are having a prod around why not give everything a pull and shake. If it isn't broken or worn now it could be in the future and atleast then you will remember how this should be...

Remove the fan belt and then run the engine for a moment and see if noise has gone,if it has it is ether water pump or alternator if still there chain slap plate adjustment or tensioners
ps a good fix for chain rattle is place a large screwdriver down side of chain and onto tensioner and ease it out a notch

The hydraulic tensioners have a very course ratchet on them and if just nearly up to next step can rattle like hell
