Wheel Bearings - Grumbly front end

Hi All,
Just quicky, how difficult is a front wheel bearing change? I did one on a Mk1 Escort once and that was a doddle, I am assuming the P6 will be as easy. Also Halfords ok for new bearing kits? they say they can get me some for the next day and it would save me the postage over someone like Wadhams.
Cheers

Hi,

I don't know about the relative merits of Halfords over elsewhere - I suppose quality is the important factor.

However, changing front bearings is reasonably straightforward. Just follow the book & take your time. I do most things myself on my car & am always very concious of doing a job 'properly' (ie: won't endanger the lives of my family). I wouldn't have any qualms about doing one again.

It's easy just follow the golden rule which is to knock them in straight with a suitably sized socket. Keep them spottlessly clean. The only saftey critical bit is to use a new correctly sized split pin and make sure it bent over so that it doesn't foul the inside of the dust cover in anyway.

I must say though I've come close to death changing a wheel bearing but thats 'cos i'm a total prat!

Just have to add that it may require a lot of force to shift the old bearing land that slides onto the actual stub. PLEASE dont be tempted to use an air chisel to "just loosen it up". I tried this on the advice of my local ( now closed down) garage. I ended up stuffing the whole stub and had to strip down the whole strut to relace the lot. Very expensive and a lesson to us all. :(
