Why the fibre timing gear?

Looking at it, it must be more expensive to make this composite gear than a solid metal one. So given the inferior performance, why do it?

Is it quieter perhaps? An engineered weakness so to limit wear on the cheap, weedy timing chain?

So both properties are basically a function of Rover not shelling out on a decent duplex set-up in the first instance?

Hi Peter,

The Rover/Land Rover timing set with nylon teeth on an aluminium alloy wheel provides a quiet operation, and I imagine that was their primary reason for using it. The chain is a Morse chain, and not a roller chain, so that also allows for a design which will rapidly wear. This in turn will lead to retarded camshaft timing, which although reducing engine performance off the line, will improve performance at the top end.

My original engine saw over 203,000 Miles of service, and when removed the timing set had only two teeth left, all the others had broken off or worn away. I remain amazed that the chain, which was incredibly loose, didn't skip.

My understanding is that the original nylon/morse set up is really only good in terms of providing reliable service for no more than 50,000 Miles (80,000km).

Ron.

So as changing it is really no big deal on this engine and 50k would represent a decades worth of motoring for me, It wouldn't be entirely daft to use a new genuine fibre gear again for quietness as they are a tenner instead of switching to a metal alternative which is generally recommended on this forum?

Love the stories Ron. Experience like yours is priceless.

Sure Peter, absolutely. There is nothing wrong with using the OEM nylon / aluminium alloy timing set for everyday motoring.

These days there is an abundance of information and misinformation floating about, whereas 20 years ago, such was much harder to come by. As a consequence, Rover owners just drove their cars, rather than worrying that something was going to fail.

Ron.

It's not just Rover that used those nylon gears. My Mini had it too, so it must be a BL thing.

The Ford "Essex" v6 had / has a poor reputation for destroying it's nylon timing gears too ( as well as having the wrong number of cylinders  )

Nylon gears in an A series?
Are you sure John?
When I opened mine up to do the conversion from 1100 to 1275 it had a partially munched nylon gear in it. Maybe it was a Leyland SA thing, though
because they did do things differently at Blkackheath.

Ford V4 & V6 Essex engines had a gear with fibre teeth as well. I've never seen any on minis.

Definitely on the Essex V6 engines, when I rebuilt mine as Ron discovered, the teeth were more of long past fairy tale than an effective way to time an engine, just being rounded bumps at best.
