Windscreen rubber replacement

I have just finished replacing my windscreen due to the original rubber beginning to degrade. I bought the rubber from Rover Classics; seems a quality item with formed curves in the two corners. I have a minor grump; the fit of the rubber around the corner finishers isn't great; the outer rubber lip doesn't sit tight on the finisher, I.e. It sits slightly off with a gap. I am confident the screen is jacked into the correct position as all seems fine apart from this minor niggle. Does anyone know the correct way the square jack washers are supposed to sit as the bolthole is offset? Are the boltholes positioned so the bolts sit nearer the screen or towards the front of the car. Any advice gratefully received!

I had a similar problem, and ended up sticking it in place with an adhesive called Silcoset 158. You can buy it in B&Q.

It is an adhesive that is designed for sticking glass sections of oven doors onto the rubber surround if they fall off. You need to clean both surfaces with white spirit before sticking in place, and the seal needs to be held in place for a day or two to allow the adhesive to set properly. I used a thick piece of wire (It was actually a handle from a plastic bucket!) bent into a 'U' shape to lightly press on the seal. I held it in place with some plastic suckers on the glass. I will post a picture if I can find one. I also used it to stick my decker panel seal to the window as it was also a poort fit. It looks great now. It has been in place for a month and is still stuck fast!

I remember I had the same problem. I just pushed the rubber into the corners before I had everything tightened & it stayed there. I suppose it meant that the rubber was a 1/2 inch short at the bottom of the A pillars, but it's way long enough anyway.

Incidentally, I've never used a 'new' rubber; the original ones do the same! :|

Phil, if you used an original rubber it is likely that this is slightly different from the aftermarket rubbers now available. I did notice the new rubber was slightly different in profile to the original. I did push the rubber hard into the corners whilst the Arbomast was still tacky.

It isn't so much the rubber is short; the outer flange that fits over the stainless trim is a nice fit over the windscreen but where the corner pieces are, the flange doesn't sit on the corner pieces (it 'lifts' by around 2-3mm). Despite the seal being formed at the corners, it appears to be a case of surplus material; I suspect the forming process for the modern rubbers is slightly different to that for the original rubbers.
