Windscreen wipers

happy days

Am going to see why my delay isn't working on the wipers. Can you get the delay governor out on it's own or does the whole wiper motor need to be removed to get to it. Cheers MIck

Hi Mick

Easy enough to get the delay unit out. There are 2 screws holding it to the wiper motor, 3 electrical connectors and one tube that pulls off. It can be a bit fidly if you have big hands though as there isn't much room between the wiper motor and the heater box, but they do come out.

Good luck

Dave

Anyone replaced the airtube for the wiperdelay ?
Have looked for a thread on past forum posts
Mines cracked in a few places so obviously has stopped working . I was thinking of taping the new piece onto one end and drawing it through but can see the cracks actually parting company and leaving it stranded behind the dash.
Mine's an aircon model and there seems not much room behind/under the dash -if thats any different rom a non a/c P6
Is there a simple remedy ?
Ive done the wiper motor end and cleaned up the contacts and fixed the sponge thingy. Sucking/blowing on this end with a small air tube gets the delay working.
The whole system seems to work other than the long and windy tube

Hello Gerald,
The wiper delay tube is bound within the dash wiring harness so will not pull out. Probably best just to run a new length of hose direct from the delay unit to the steering column,
Roly.

Hi, try threading micro bore nylon air line through and fixing short hoses each end.
Go to any commercial motor factors, it is used for air gauges and automatic oil
lubrication systems.

Thanks for that info Colin .
Your comment makes sense to get the airflow restriction happening. I thought about the knot idea as in a previous post , but can see that tube crimping itself over time.

Wiper delay still not working, changed the foam, but nothing. here are a couple of pics
When the wipers are on normal speed i have power from the cable on my multimeter, switch to delay and the power at meter is zero, switch knackered ?
Also their is a small spring attached to white plastic which moves up and down with the wipers, think it shouldnt be fitted where it is as it looks like a nail it is attached too, can anyone cob=nfirm this from the pics cheers Mick

As the plasitc piece moves up and down it does hit the metal pin and move it slightly. cheers Mick

Hi Mick

It looks from the top picture that the plunger on the delay unit is being held in which is not right. It should rest against the shoulder of the sliding part of the wiper motor like this:

This is the set up on my car so you can compare connections etc. You'll see there's no spring on mine either and it works fine.

Hope it helps.

Dave

Thanks mine does look slightly different. Not sure the spring is all about. Will have a go tomorrow. Cheers. Mick

I've actually got my wiper mechanism in pieces at the moment to refurbish it so I've got a reasonable understanding of what each of the parts do. That plunger must follow the slider and is fully extended in the park position. The plunger operates the vacuum delay and there are two contacts inside which the plunger switches between.

The slider is attached to the cable drive and moves up and down with each stroke of the wipers. The small spring just helps it return to the park position, but I don't think it's vital.

On the delay setting, as the wipers mover through their arc the plunger is pressed in and break the contacts - effectively turning the wipers off - and they return to the park position. If your vacuum works the plunger will slowly extend to meet the slider and switch the motor back on again.

So, if the plunger is stuck in it is effectively on an infinite delay!

At the top of the wiper body there are two small bolts (behind the wires in the photo) which hold the delay mechanism bracket on. Remove these and you can disassemble the vacuum unit to clean it out.

.....and here are the contacts that testrider mentions in his write up...

It's certainly worthwhile cleaning the contacts as they can cause all sorts of weird symptoms. A fibre glass contact cleaner pen is great for this sort of thing.

All I would add to testrider's explanation is that when the plunger moves up and breaks the wiper motor power connection it makes another earth for the motor to allow it to return to park. If this earth is poor the wipers will sit at the top of the sweep during delay operation. Also worth mentioning is the speed of plunger return. Too slowly (as in yours) and the wipers will not work in delay, too fast and the wiper motor does not get the chance to return to park. This took me a while to work out as I could see the plunger operating correctly on mine but it was making and breaking the earth contact too fast for the wiper motor so the wipers would stop at various positions on the screen after one sweep. Once I'd found foam of a sufficient density to create a suitable delay and cleaned the contacts it all worked fine.

speaking of wipers, what do you guys use for the replacement rubber strips that slid inside the metal blade holder? I can't find a rubber blade strip that fits...

Thanks for adding that bit Dave. I got too engrosed in figuring it out to take any pictures!

I've a feeling that my bit of foam might be a bit weak so I might not get much delay. I know the vacuum pipe on mine is knackered so I had contemplated blocking the pipe hole up to make the delay non adjustable.

As for wiper refills, they're just standard wiper refills aren't they? Not sure what you can buy in Australia but you can get them in most car shops here.

As Paul says, AFAIK they're standard? I bought a pair of black Trico blades and just swapped the rubbers out from them into the original blades.

my car has the original metal wiper arm and rubber strip holders, just that I have to find some rubber replacement bits that actually fit. Sounds like I'll have to find somewhere that stocks Trico.
