wiper blade hitting front valance occastionaly

Hi yesterday on my way to a show I had my wipers on the slow speed. when I set off they were working fine however several times on the journey the drivers side wiper would decide to start hitting the front valance below the windscreen then just as quickly it would stop hitting be ok for a few more miles then start again.

when I got the car the wiper blades were off and the only marks left to fit them by was the dust marks on the windscreen. They have never hit b4 and have only just started doing it intermittently so I am a little confused as to the cause because if they were out of line surly they would hit all the time.

any help or suggestions welcome
may thanks

Hi Coop,

You'll just need to take them off again and repostion them. Move them up just a serration or two, that should do the trick.

Probably depends on how fast you are driving and the amount of water on the screen lets them slide better.

Under most wet conditions my wipers are just fine, but if it gets really wet and the wipers are on for sustained periods they sometimes contact the lower rubber. As Pilkie says, a number of factors affect them. You'll probably find that if you adjust them for really wet conditions, most of the time they'll sit too high

They have to be set up,tuned, timed whatever you want to call it to each individual car.
Its just trial and error to get them as good as poss.

hi, so buying some new parts might not help?

Mine does that if it's raining really hard and I'm going slowly.

I just accept that it does that now and again 8) It's an old car; they have their little foibles.

having spent a lot of money on a re-spray I don't really want to damage it

You could buy a new wiper motor and it wouldnt prevent it from happening occasionally.
Try refitting them so they are about 2" off the panel and see if they touch the windscreen rubber on the sweep.
Also make sure all the wiper motor mountings, and the fixings for the spindles on the front panel are good,as if they are worn, loose or broken, that wont help.

Hi, I would say it's likely to be the wheel boxes. With the wipers parked hold the wiper
arm where it attaches to the blade and try and move it through it sweep arc, if you get
more than about an inch or so of travel then they are worn, if you get 2 inches they are
definitely worn :) Either fit new wheel boxes or turn yours 180 degrees. To do that,
remove the wiper motor gearbox cover, disconnect the rack (the spiral wound cable that
disappears into the guide tube) from the gear, remove the wiper arms from the spindles,
then pull the rack out, then turn the spindles 180 degrees, then push the rack back in and
reconnect everything back together. If someone hasn't done that already that should be
better.
