Wiper motor / governor

Hi all

I did not manage to get the wipers going - not the "slow" and "delay" - settings anyway.

I cleaned all electrical contacts, sprayed them with contact spray, on the motor and governor and behind the instrument panels.
(How is the wiper delay control knob involved ? How do I reach its contacts ? I took off the panel under the steering wheel, but still cannot see the contacts. I think they will be sound, but still... )
I took out the wiper motor, dismanteled and cleaned the governor, stretched the spring a bit - it looks very good, seems to work from what I can figure. I put some new rubber mountings under the motor (...from Harley oil tank mountings  :D ...).

Much to my surprse, Jimmy does NOT have a wiper relay, at least not that we found one. Even Torsten, my mate, has not seen a wiper speed control similar to that of a P6... .
The wipers work perfectly when switched to "fast". On "delay" they do mostly nothing. On "slow" they go up a bit - then stop.
That leads me to:

- Does the rod, that comes from the middle of the governor, have constant contact to the plastic slide inserted to the motor, or does it leave a gap at some point of its work ?
- Is that slide really only "put on " and held by the small bridge ? There is nothin more attached to it than the small spring to the motor casing ?
- Where does the vacuum tube on the governor go to ? (Must be in the inlet-something ... (manifold, I guess))
- How can I test the vacuum ?
- What other reasons could there be for this problem ? :?

Thanks !

The wiper delay mechanism which is attached to the wiper motor consists of a diaphragm and a cylindrical piece of foam. That piece of foam when it degrades is the usual cause of the wipers not working correctly when switched to delay. If you renew the piece of foam which is captive beneath the spring clip on the top cover, then an improvement should occur.

There is also a plastic tube which runs from the delay adjuster to the delay mechansm on the wiper motor. The delay adjuster is identified by the white knob on the side of the steering column. There are no contacts at this location. Sometimes the plastic tube can develop a split, and this will see the wipers work without delay as they would when switched to 'slow'.

Hope this helps.

Jimmy has already had the piece of foam replaced. My main suspect for this problem is still the multi-way connector onto the wiper motor itself. Clearly the armature and field of the motor are OK if it works in full speed, likewise the park switch. I think it's time to start applying power directly to the motor, ie with the multi plug removed to check what works then. If everything works under those circumstances you know it is a wiring fault or fault in the multi-plug. If not it's new motor time!
