Has anyone seen the p6 on ebay. Item no 170155942910, It has an XC registration mark. Most test reports i have read over the years seem to use p6's with this index mark, why is this and could this car have been a test car of some kind !
Cheers. Si

I think Mark Gray went up and had a quick look at this one last time it was on eBay...don't believe there's anything extraordinary about the car....although I believe it was such a shed I don't think he hung about to have a really good look

:)

There is another XC plated ex-company car on eBay...but seeing as I'm selling it I won't mention go on!

Cheers

'XC' signified Solihull Vehicle Registration Office.

Rover registered the company cars there. 'XC' was in use from 1964 to 1974 - when Solihull VRO closed. 'Factory' cars were then registered either via Longbridge or in Coventry along with Triumphs - and on a variety of plates, and thus many interesting company cars from 1974 onwards have never been identified. The very last P6 - VVC700S - was registered in Coventry. Interesting cars like the Earls Court Show Platinum 2200 were registered in Birmingham.

It should also be noted that lots of cars other than Rover company cars were registered at Solihull VRO, and you often see Triumphs and MG's registered by local dealers to Solihull with 'XC' plates - also there are Rovers with 'XC' plates which were registered by the same dealers and not by Rover at all. If buying an 'XC' you really need to check with Gaydon if you're just buying it as it might be a company car.

I know at least one person who paid over the top for an 'XC' plated 3500, he was told by the less than scrupulous vendor that it was a 'director's car' - that actually turned out not to be a 'factory' registered car at all.

The earliest 'XC's are on a 'B' suffix. The last are mainly on 'M' suffix, with only 'VXC' being used on 'N' registered cars.

From my old registration mark guide you can get the following flavours:

AXC on a 'B', 'F' or 'K'
BXC on a 'B', 'G' or a 'K'
CXC on a 'B', 'G' or a 'K'
DXC on a 'B', 'C' 'G' or an 'L'
EXC on a 'C' 'G' or an 'L'
FXC on a 'C' 'G' or an 'L'
GXC on a 'C' 'G' or an 'L'
HXC on a 'C' 'H' or an 'L'
JXC on a 'C' 'D' 'H' or 'L'
KXC on a 'D' 'H' or 'L'
LXC on a 'D' 'H' or 'L'
MXC on a 'D' or 'H'
NXC on 'D' 'H' or 'M'
OXC on 'D' 'E' 'H' 'J' or 'M'
PXC on 'E' 'J' or 'M'
RXC on 'E' 'J' or 'M'
SXC on 'E' 'J' or 'M'
TXC on 'E' 'F' 'J' or 'M'
UXC on 'F' 'J' or 'M'
VXC on 'F' 'K' or 'N'
XXC on 'F' or 'K'
and YXC on 'F' or 'K'

Cheers
Nick

Thanks for your reply nick, your knowedge on p6 xc history is quite something. I have seen tonight that the car did'nt sell but the extra photos did show a huge hole in the floor. Its a shame that these early p6's fall into a bad state. I have seen your p6 on ebay tonight aswell and she looks fantastic and i wish you good luck with the sale, I hope the winning bidder looks after her. I am attempting a rolling restoration on my v8 at the moment but this has slowed due to lack of funds, but i'm getting their.

Cheers

Thanks Simon

I do know my history, but am no mechanic, which proves it takes all sorts to make a world!

Judging by the amount of people watching my car I suspect it will sell, will be sad to see it go...after the new gearbox, clutch and brakes it's a great drive.

Cheers

As long as that wasn't my 'XC' car, I'll be happy..

I have OXC140H which was referenced in James Taylor's book

Nice one
You just bought the car?
It's a very significant car in the grand scheme of things, but I gather is a monster resto!

Yeah, I picked it up last month. It's currently under a car cover until I move in the next few months.

Hopefully then I can see how much needs doing. The wings are useable, but the doors are a mess. The electric windows still try to move, so once the frames have been freed up, they should be fine and it came with a spare set of doors and US-style bumpers. Mechanically, everything runs with the exception of the air-con which tries to engage, but doesn't quite make it. The brakes need new hoses as the old ones have corroded.

The worst part is the chassis. The drivers' side floor is pretty much gone - full width and half the length. There are holes throughout the chassis.. I'm waiting until I can take the panels off to see if the chassis can be saved, or if I'll need a replacement.

It's actually in better condition that I thought it would be.. once my Estate is finished in about a years' time, I'll start working on it. Until then, I'll just keep the engine running by driving it up and down the driveway every few weeks.

When I spoke to the previous owner, a knowledgable and pleasant Rover Head. He was of the opinion that the base unit was almost unsaveable.

A big dilemma as the car is obviously a historic one and needs to be preserved (originally Sir George Farmer's, Rover Chairman's, company vehicle) - the car was acurately described in the James Taylor book - but a base unit swap would take away a lot of what the car is.

Good luck, anything we can do etc. etc.

Cheers
