Hello guys. My names Tim and Im 17 from Watnall Nottingham. I've ben into classic cars ever since I was a nipper, in particular British motors. For many years now I've been restoring old bicycles, such as Raleigh choppers and Grifters [my grandfather worked at Raleigh Nottingham for 50 years] But I thought seeing as I have such an interest in old cars, maybe I should look out for a project? :) I'm no expert when it comes to restoring cars. Infact I'm what you'd call a novice 8) but I know my way round a motor. Anyway, In the small ads of my local rag I've come across a Rover p6 for sale. Its priced at £300 Ono and its been off the road for a number of years...Its a 1973 white, manual, 2.2 twin carb model. the owner told me over the phone that the offside rear passenger door is rotten and there a hole in the front wing. But he assured me it was running before it was parked up. One thing I forgot to ask over the phone is if it has any service history! Going to look at it in a few days time and will probably need some feedback from the forum if I should go for it or not. Anyway ill keep you posted and thanks for letting me join :D

Thanks all!
Tim

Welcome to the forum.

At £300 i wouldnt worry about a service history. It is nice to have it but just try and get as much history orally about the car.

You will probably find more rust (which isnt that bad).

If you take the car just ask questions and post picture and you will get a speedy reply. We really like photos btw.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Colin

if you want more advice don't hesitate to post back. Look under the rear seats for rust/holes ...

Cheers folks! The seller has sent me a few pics of the car before going to view it in person. Looking at the pics it deffo looks like a new rear door is needed. And also, on the nearside, the door bottom's don't look healthy. but if they are the only major areas of corrosion I think its worth a trip out to go and look at it 8)

What do u think guys?

:?
If the door bottoms are that far gone... and it's been sat in that position for any length of time, I wouldn't hold out much hope for the sills and floors!
As they always say, don't buy the first one you see!

What's your budget? If you're lucky (or your name's Fraser Kinghorn) you can still get rough 4-pots for £400-500 that need a bit of work for MOT.

Michael

PS: Welcome Young'un! You're upping the ranks. Loads of us on here are under 30.

Cheers Red rover. the seller said I can have it for £150. I know it needs new panels, a repaint and some mechanical tlc, but do u think its too cheap at that price to turn down?
If the floorpans and sills are rotten as you say. Ill certainly be walking away.

If it has the original 2.2 tc engine and it is good, £150 sounds worth it just for that if you have the space.
I'm sure there would be some salvageable parts from the interior etc but as a starting point the car looks well past being economically repairable from those photos.
You might want to keep looking..
Jim

Sadly, I can only echo Jim's comments. Basically what we're saying is £150 is a good price to pay for the spares that the car will offer as a donor, if you have the space to store it.
PM your details. Plenty of people are selling cars through the club so there may be something suitable on my list of people selling/thinking of selling.

Welcome along Tim. Those 2200TC's are probably as rare now as the very first cars from '64 so if you fancy a challenge it's worth saving, but if you want a car to tickle up and drive I'd say you'd be lucky to get it through an MOT without welding a load of new metal into the floors and sills and it's be best to look for another.

Welcome young Tim

I could be wrong, but sadly that looks a bit of a basket case

I've probably just raised the average age of posters in this thread by a few years :D

You're still younger than your car, Dave! You can be in the kids club if you want.

I would give that a miss.

You will spend a lot of time and money on it. The intial condition looks bad and p6 are always worse. If the bumpers and parts are ok then It would be worth stripping. But to me you are looking at panels, paint so £1500+. Welding £, Brakes £400, tyres £250+, recovery £100+ not trying to scare you just pointing out a realistic view.

When I was 20 i bought a £100 2200tc in better looking condition but had been off the road for years.

I think that if you keep your eyes open you will get more promising car for only a few hundred more. Try to get something cosmetically ok as mechanical bits are quite cheap and easy to do in comparison.

I would say go and have a look to see how rough a p6 can be.

Only by a month and a half Michael :D

I would tend to agree with the others on this one. That's a particularly sorry example, unfortunately. Anything that's been sitting on grass for a while is often bad news, and, from initial inspection, that P6 has had a tough life, sitting around. My advice is to try to find something which at least drives, but doesn't need to be MOT'd or taxed. Gumtree is worth a look, but auctions on ebay are good too. I'd say you could get a four pot, which could be MOT'd with ease for well under £1000, particularly if you're persistent. Haggle hard, and be prepared to walk away. I'd say that car is worth £150, because you could get a lot of useful parts, and still get a bit on the weighbridge for what's left.

Good luck with your search!

I am certain there are lots of good parts in that car, so much so that it is a commercial proposition to buy and strip, motor, box, diff, glass and the odd body panel or 3 I could see this car making well over 500 quid with out to much effort.

Ps Great photo bucket album!

Over £500 in parts?! Not likely.

A running 4-pot engine will only go for around £200. Gearbox and diff maybe £25-50 each. Panels don't look great, therefore maybe £10 each at the most. Glass isn't worth anything. It's far more effort to move that than you'd ever get back.

Cheers for the advice guys, much appreciated. Based on what you've said, I think it might be best to give this a miss. Think I might look into another which is a bit more commissionable. Will keep me yes peeled folks!

LOL cheers, glad you like 8)

Hi Tim, and welcome to the forum! :)

You've come to the right place for advice, and I'm sure you'll end up with a P6 to love.

Not sure whether you're looking for a project or drive-away car. Depends on your budget, but I'd certainly steer clear of that rotten example!

If you do fancy a project (and it certainly sounds as if you're not afraid to get the spanners out) have a look at the '66 2000 I've got for sale.

http://www.classicroverforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=17159

No problem if it's not what you're after, but if you just wanted to pop down the road to me (in Leicester) just for a P6 chat over a cuppa, and to learn a bit about what to look for on your search then you'd be welcome.

I love how the cars keep attracting young classic-seekers...we need them to keep P6's alive and kicking! :)

Cheers,

Stan

Hi and welcome its great to see young ones joining and showing interest in the great old rover p6. Good advice on that car its well past it and only fit as a doner. As said something will come along thats worth fixing up and they are great to work on.
