I like your thinking. I would like to see some form of safety lock on the release lever though - just a hook and chain perhaps, or preferably a sprung catch that had needs a deliberate action to release.

Hi, I usually weld a nut on the end of the valve and use a spanner, it's then multi-positional and with no spanner on no accidental operation.

As it is I'd just be worried that when working between the crane and the car with the crane loaded, I'd nudge that screwdriver with the back of my leg and it would all come crashing down on my fingers.

As much as it's an embuggerance to release those and trolley jacks, too, for that matter, there's a reason for it. Like Harvey said, you don't want to bump it at a critical time, and the way they are it's a deliberate action to lower them.
