Obtaining a Heritage Certificate

Hi everyone,

looking for some advice. My P6 will be eligible for road tax exemption in Apr '17. I want to start putting the wheels in motion to change its classification to 'historic vehicle' in plenty of time to ensure I dont pay any more tax than is necessary.
Can anyone advise how long it takes to make the change and exactly what documentation I'll need?
I know I'll need proof that the car was built prior to Jan '77 and Im sure I do that by means of a Heritage Certificate. Can these only be obtained from one source? Or if there are several, which is the most trusted among other P6 owners?

Thanks in advance,

Craig.

I went into the PO on 2nd April and handed them the heritage certificate, Insurance, MOT, and V5. She took the V5, punched a few keys on the keyboard, asked me to sign the V5 and that was it. She asked if it was taxed and I said, 'no.' I did ask how long it would take until I could tax it, and she replied that it was taxed, she had taxed it for me. Didn't even look at the Heritage Cert, MOT or insurance.

Simples :) although I have heard some horror stories

Hi Craig,
If your car is manufactured or registered before 31st December 1976, the earliest you can apply is 1st April 2017.
You will need a V10 form (attached) and write ‘Historic’ in taxation class.
On your V5 log book write ‘Historic’ in taxation class and sign the document for the amendment.
Take them both to the post office and they will send them off for you and register you for tax exemption and will become tax exempt on processing at the post office. It normally takes a couple of weeks to receive your V5 back.

You will only need a Heritage Certificate if for example your car was registered in January/February 1977 and need proof of manufacture date. If you need a Heritage Certificate you will need to contact the Archive department at the British Motor Museum www.britishmotormuseum.co.uk
where you can order one online through their website.

In the meantime please contact me should you require any further information.

Kind regards

Craig,

Your car was first registered on the the 1st June 1976.

So your V5 should be all you need as proof.

The heritage certificate is quite interesting to add to your cars history though if you have a spare £45.

What if my current tax runs out prior to April '17? Do I need to pay to have it taxed then get a rebate in April?

Mine ran out on 31st March, so as I didn't know how long it would take, I SORNed it. Back on the road on 2nd April :)
