Rust proofing a P6!

Hi guys,

I'm interested to know what other owners use to protect their cars.

I have a feeling my car was once well looked after but has been neglected for a little while before i bought it. I have some what looks like surface rust under the bonnet around the weld seams, and some further down the side the engine. I'm thinking its a good idea when swapping the engine to get this off and rustproof/paint the area.

What are the weak spots on the P6? Where should i check carefully, and what do you paint/cover it with? DInitrol? Waxoil?

Thanks for you ideas/ suggestions!

Rich.

Basically anywhere on the car!.
Everywhere you can get to even after taking wings off!!
You can throw every rust remedy at it and it will eventually rust again..
If the preparation is not done right,it will come back quicker.
Everybody has their own favourites, and swears by it.

I drill new holes & and enlarge the existing ones in the sill depression under the edge of the carpet that will take a flexible lance from 'waxoyl' gun, then spray away until you can see the fluid at the drain holes. You really need the outer sills off for this - they unscrew, & the sill tread plates will have to be off to peel the carpet back.

Also, whilst you've got the rear seats out, peel back the trim at the top of the inside of the d-post & you'll see 2 vertical slots. Spray wax through these aswell. Pull out all the metal discs originally used to blank the large holes in various places (outer d-post, bottom of b/c-post etc) & spray in there too!

There are several white plastic plugs aswell which can be removed & sprayed through....

Really, spray everywhere you can & you'll reap the rewards in years to come! :D

Dunno about everyone else, but I've come to view wing removal as a service item that should be done at least every 2 years. It's not difficult and is the only way to really see what's going on and sort out any trouble before it gets out of hand.

i did wonder about that! I guess as the wings and outer sills are purely cosmetic it is the only way you can have an inkling....

These suggestions are what i need. I have a replacement boot floor to go in at some point and considering the lack of seals then once it's fitted it will definitely have a passive dehumidifier living in there...;-)

I keep the car dry - I void wet days and salt but if caught I don't sweat it. It hasn't deteriorated in 8 years. It helps that I have a space in a large, dry shared garage. The larger volume of air means it dries very quickly.

Due to accessibility - which is great with the sill covers removed, it should be easy enough to protect them. The structure isn't that complex either.

That's why this forum is so good against the social media pages, you can search back for information from decades ago :)
