Where best in Scotland to get a respray?

Hi,

just bought a 2200 TC and I'm considering a full bare metal respray.

Can anyone recommend a good body work specialist in or near Glasgow who would undertake the respray? Also, whats a ball park figure for this job?

Cheers,

Craig.

Hi Craig welcome to the forum. Sorry you have had no replies but its not a particularly big forum with only a few members north of the border. I can only really think of 1 or 2 regular member who might be able to help in and around the Glasgow area! You may have to wait until they pop in and reply. There is a huge wealth of knowledge here and you will find the answer to most questions of a technical nature, just a bit of a struggle with geographical based queries
Show us a couple of pictures of your car if you can as they always get the ball rolling cheers Tam.

Hi Craig!
Your best bet is to track down your local classic car club and talk to them!
Or other classic car owners in the area may know where is best to go!
Otherwise look in the phonebook or google and visit a few of the local sprayshops, chat to the boss, see what cars they have about, look at some of the work,do they like classic cars or regard them as just another spray job!
Will they take all the panels off, repair any damage and paint them, and refit them as it should be done,or will they prep and paint the panels if you take them in to be done!
Does the roof need doing, and the door shuts on the base unit??
Local economic factors can determine cost charged, but it could be as little as £1000 but as much as £5000!
You could find an EXCELLENT shop willing to do it for £1000 but it will take a month or so on and off to do it,as its regarded as a cash job!
Bear in mind the consumable materials needed and paint are not cheap!
I visited about 5 painters in my area before deciding who would do my Arden green S1,as my regular painter, who did my P6V8,MGTF1500 and my TR6 gave it up to go and work for McLaren in their sprayshop!
He did however have an opinion on who he thought was best for the job! :)
Whoever you choose, agree exactly what you want done, time scale and price, and if possible get it in writing and signed by both parties!
DONT!!
Give any of them money up front!!
Only pay up once you have inspected it and are happy, and even hold back 10% for a month afterwards just incase of any problems arising!
Some may ask you to buy the paint if its a cash job!

we're not big on replies here are we.

As Tam says, when you ask a geographically specific question that no-one has an answer too you are usually faced with silence

We can only comment on what we know and forum members are few and far between in Scotland.

Good luck in your search and you might perhaps want to try some other forums too.

One thing I know for sure is that when you find a good one stick with them :)

cheers for the info guys. I'll join the P6 owners club tonite and see if I can do a bit of networking on there.

Ive had one astronomical quote for the respray from a bodyshop up here. it would pain me to even say it again. so what Im thinking about doing is sorting out a couple of minor bubbling issues and then having the car 'wrapped'. any thoughts on this? its a fairly new process i think? and maybe not normal to be done on a classic? but could well be a much cheaper alternative to a full respray.

Cheers,

Craig.

I'm getting my p6 sprayed a few panels at a time by a local painter in Dundee. I bought enough paint to spray the whole car so everything is done from the same mix. I had the paint split down into 1 litre tins to make things easier.

One way you can save money if you want a bare metal job is to strip the car yourself. It isn't the hardest job but the time involved is huge so you'll save yourself a lot of cash if you deliver bare panels. I strip them then etch prime them from a rattle can to keep the rust off.

The advantage of this is that you can see what you are dealing with before it is covered up with paint and make repairs where necessary.

Hi Craig,

I'd second brannigan's advice. A big part of a respray's cost involves removing panels and stripping off/masking up brightwork, etc, especially as a P6 needs to be sprayed panels-off.

Here's my take on it which, all up, cost me less than a grand as all the painter had to do was flat & paint! 4 years on and still looking good IMHO.

Good luck,

Problem is that good painters wont spray older cars in case the rust pops up.

I use a guy in Kilbirnie who is reasonable. Heard good things about a place in paisley and knockentieber but £££. Sort of concours finished.

There is a guy in motherwell who may be able to help. Paul mcfadden he runs a classic garage behind the police station. Mostly MG but will know who is doing a good job. I dont have a number but you will be able to find him.

Telephone number quotes means they arent interested.

Gordon in strathaven got a nice paint job done a few years back. I will drop him a message for you.

Cheers for all the advice guys.

My issue is that im not really very mechanically minded. I dont have the know-how or even the facilities to do any preparatory work myself which could bring the costs down.

So im completely beholden to whoever is going to do the work for me. Thats why im hoping to get a steer on who is good and trustworthy and has been used by fellow owners :)

Colin if you can get any info that would be greatly appreciated.

I had mentioned the idea of having the car 'wrapped'. Does anyone have any thoughts on this process? Could be a much more convenient and cheaper alternative to respraying?

Craig.

I have spoken to Gordon and he has given me a number for the guy he recommends in East Kilbride.

I will pm you.
