10% ethanol fuel

Recently all the petrol stations in my town have applied stickers on their pumps indicating the fuel "May contain up to 10% ethanol". What, if any, consequences could one expect in running this fuel in a 4 pot engine. Are there any additives to mitigate any adverse effects?

Hi Roy

Bad news for us I think. Have a look here. The subject of increasing amounts of ethanol in fuel is the subject of a great deal of debate over here.

Firstly I would consider the condition of your fuel tank. You may need to remove it, and have it treated for rust, and coated. Old age will cause this problem, although ethanol fuel may accelerate the problem.

If you fuel tank has rust issues, then you fuel lines may be clogged also. It is easy to run new ones with 1/4 in ethanol compatabile rubber hose.

Carb floats. With brass carb floats in ethanol fuel, replacing them is almost part of the de winterisation process, as they sink after a time in ethanol fuel. Replace them with stay up floats form Burlen UK, or from British Parts Northwest. Also consider replacing you seats while you are at it.

I have not heard of any problems or experienced problems with the diaphragm in the fuel pump.

I'm told that UK petrol already has something like 5% ethanol in it, which does raise some concern. Certainly increasing it to 10% is going to amplify those concerns manifold! :?

I've heard about something you need to add to your fuel (like lead replacement) to 'dissarm' the ethanol in the fuel. Don't have a clue what it was though, anybody any thoughts on this?
