16" ALLOY WHEELS - They fit under the rear arches!

Hi All,
Got my full set of 16" Jeep Grand Cherokee alloys with 205/50 R16 Tyres, and guess what they fit just dandy up under that rear wheel arch, unfortunately they rub on the front strut (doh!) so its off to the local Crooozers shop tomorrow to get some 5mm spacers, not sure if I will need them yet but where can you get longer studs from? do any old studs fit or are they P6 specific?
Cheers
Al

Ok,
Got my spacers, perfect fit, even had 10 full turns of the wheel nuts so long studs not needed excellent, Just driven back from Abergavenny (around a 15 Mile trip on twisty A roads) and all seems fine, ride is a bit harsher, but no worse than a modern car, and it tramlines a bit but again no worse than a modern car, the biggest differnece though is GRIP, by jingo braking performance is fantastic and try as I might I could not get the back end out of line, usually fairly easy on greasy February roads, this probably has a lot to do with the fact that tyres are now 205 section V rated Michelin Pilot Exaltos, and not harder than the road designed to last the life of the car Chinese rubbish mixed with remoulds that varied in size from straight 185 R14s to 185 65 R14s! As soon as I get the chance I will post some pictures on my website.
Thanks for listening!
Cheers

P.S. Now got no need for my P5 rostyles, will post a couple of pics on the above site before they go on eBay

Yep, I run 205's all round.. my girl's in getting the rear end restored at the moment (I'm poor so doin a bit at a time), but boy, was getting very wobbly and body roll @ speed was counted in 10's of degrees!

Defianately wouldn't go back to smaller tyres tho, I actually have to intend to lose traction...

Congrats Alimorg for lateral thinking !

Bet the old girl looks really chunky now, will check out your website. Shame you can't pose with squeeling tyres off the lights now though, perhaps a biger engine.......?

Alimorg,

Are your alloy wheels made by Jeep? Please post photos of your car with these wheels and tyres on --- I'm dying to see them!!

Can you identify the Jeep part number for these wheels for me?

I have decided that I need to change to 15" or 16" wheels so that I can have a choice of modern 195/205 HR rated tyres. I can only find 185 14" HR Dunlops at a price (each £165 plus VAT I think) that I cannot bring myself to pay. I'd rather buy good modern tyres, but I have not found any wheels that will fit.

John Larkin.

John - I am not sure of the Jeep Part number, all I know is that they must be from a Jeep Grand Cherokee post 1999 - That is the year the stud pattern changed from 5x4.5" to 5x5"
they really are quite cheap on eBay though, last week a set of five 16" wheels like the ones I have here went unsold with a start price of £25 - for five! no one with a jeep wants the 'small' 16" stock wheels, and the only other cars they fit are the P6 (and SD1, but don't let on to the SD1 Boys or the price will go up!)

Ron, I am watching a 4.2 short engine on ebay as we speak!!!

P.S. Rudiger if you are looking feel free to take any of these pictures for your site

I reckon you deserve a pat on the back for your efforts. Your car looks great shod with the Cherokee rims, reckon it'd look even better with the wheels painted up like your Photoshop mock-up. The front end has simply got to drop now, you don't want to be looking at all that fresh air between the top of the front tire and the wheelarch! Recent posts on this forum mentioned AXA 20-position adjustable gas shocks and uprated shorter springs, exactly like what was already fitted to my last 3500 by the previous owner. I can confirm that with a full complement of new poly bushes and ball joints my car runs beautifully, 2" lower than stock on 150% uprated springs, with polished Vanden Plas SD1 14" alloys shod with 205s all round. You won't regret lowering it, it rolls significantly less pushed around corners, although if I set up the rear suspension too stiff it likes to break loose abruptly! All you need now are some rare-as-hens-teeth 'Police' spoilers on the front valance. I think I'm going to go the Magstar route this year, they're my favorite period alloy wheel and look superb on my P6 with a little bit of help from Photoshop!

Hi BB,
Its a '74 Manual 3500s in lunar Grey with Black boxpleat leather interior, not much increase in road noise, you just notice the small bumps (Like small potholes or raised overbanding in the road) that the large tyres used to soak up, the car copes with speed bumps etc. as well as it always did i.e. you hardly notice them!

Mr task,
I agree with you the front does need to come down a bit! however, I do kind of like the body roll, its part of the character of the car but you cant have your cake and eat it, as soon as finances alow it will probably be lowered! Also watch this space for my photo record of fitting a £19.99 maplin central locking kit!

Wicked wheels mate!
I went for the good old Superlite ( Minilite copies), in 16 inch X 7 wide. However I had to flare the front and rear arches to get the things to fit. I wish I had seen this earlier!
Still, it might be a good look for the new car that I will be starting on soon, we shal just have to see.
Cheers

They look great, funny thing I suggested 4*4 rims a few years back, but people told me they wouldn't work with 'normal' tyres, I guess they were wrong !!, next question then is do range-rover rims fit ?

These modern style rims would look great on my car, which is loving its new home, indoors at last after 10 years in the rain with no roof !

I've got loads of work to do to get her back up to decent condition, and the addition of this type of rim especiallly at that type of price would be great.

Thanks for the info !

hi all
i have noticed that the fitting of after market alloys to the p6 is quite a popular upgrade,so i have purchased a set of sd1 vitesse alloys i would appreciate any fitting tips from fellow members .i have also got the sd1 studs and nuts, will they go in the existing stud holes or will they need to be enlarged?or is it indeed necessary can the original studs be used.

Just Had a thought, I would not like to use these wheels and tyres without power steering, its heavy enough with! also, prehaps someone could back me up on this but I am pretty sure the four cylinder cars have a slightly different rear suspension setup - the tie bar that goes to the de dion elbow has a bend in it on the V8 to clear the 185 tyres so if you have a 4 pot check this first

Webmaster, sorry no Rangie wheels won't fit - forgot to answer that one!
Also, does anyone have any police spoilers? or know where I can get a decent look at some?
Cheers

Not many 16" rims for sale on ebay at the moment, mostly 17" and a few 18" (I'm only talking jeep wheels), now I wonder if the 17" or 18" would fit.... Hmmmmm
Might need to get the grinder out.... As long as they fit the hub with roughly the correct offset, I can sort the rest with grinder and welder..... :D

Richard

I don't see why the 17s wouldnt fit, there is plenty of room up under that arch, the main reason I went for the 16s is that they are 7" wide (the 17s are 7.5") and according to The Wheel and Tyre Bible a 7" rim is the max you can go to with a 205 section tyre, 215s will go on a 7.5 though basically its a case of suck it and see. All I can tell you is that with the wheels I have on at the moment even with a fully loaded boot I can get my hand in between the tyre and the closest part of the bodywork (D post? - Something I couldn't do with the original wheels and tyres - try it yourself its a close fit!) and I can get my hand between the tyre and the link that goes to the De Dion elbow, my hand if probably a good 3/4 inch thick, so in theory there is 1.5 inches of clearance so if you fit the 17s there should be up to an inch all round to play with. As for the fronts, I have a 5mm Spacer but you might need to go up to 10, which may mean you need longer studs as well, also you will need some new taper wheel nuts, I got mine from Superlite wheels, £1 each + £5 P&P, umm I think that is about it really, I did fancy some of the five spoke 17" wheels but these 16s came up at the right price at the right time.

Hello
My sadly very rusty '73 3500 has 'Police' spoilers, they were on it when I bought it. Apparently they really do help to stop the car lifting up at the front when you're booting it. They add a definite sense of purpose to the P6, which I've always thought looks 'chinless' without them.
I'm buying another P6 3500 next week (as long as it is as rust-free as the seller assures me!), and I'll be swapping the spoilers over from the rotten car to the solid one, amongst other bits'n'pieces. Whilst they're off the car I could probably make a mould of them in order to produce a limited number of replicas for sale to interested club members, if somebody just explains to me how to do it, 'cos I've never tried glassfibre modelling before... Let me know if any of you would be interested in replicas, and how much you would reasonably be prepared to pay for some, and of course if you have any knowledge of working with glassfibre, pass it on!

If you look on the other clubs web gallery under S2 V8's there is a picture of green car with a louvred bonnet and a police spoiler on the front.

Mr Task if you're thinking of making copies you might find it just as easy to find a firm who specialise in making glassfibre products and get a quote for manufacturing replicas from your original. Working with glassfibre isn't too difficult but it's bloody messy! There is a firm down the road from me where I get my materials from who specialise in making planter tubs for offices but they also do small production runs of all sorts of glassfibre prodcucts. I'm sure you can find one in your area (might need to brush up on some pretty unusual German phrases though!)

Hi all

Just a quick word of advice on this - on the back of how good alimorg's motor looks, I went ahead and won some similar wheels on Ebay (item 7954434285) but on visiting the tyre guy this morning (with 5mm spacers to hand), was told that the studs are slightly out so the wheels are no good for my 3500S.

Just to let you know that not all post 1998 wheels fit.

Rick
