1977 Rover 3500S

Some things about this car just don't ring quite true to me.

"Export spec...."
Possible, but unlikely.
"One of the last made...."
Not in my opinion, Lunar Grey was not a late colour, the car has a short gear lever, it has a V8 badge on the speaker grille, a pull switch for the HRW.
I would say the white roof has replaced a leaking Webasto.
Late registered maybe, but not a late build.
What do others think?.

Mmmm.. See what you mean. I'm pretty sure the upholstery is vinyl, which again suggests an early car. The boot lid is clearly non original, having the small rover letters above the numberplate plinth - never used on an S2 of any description. I can't see any of the other give aways in the pictures though. With a short gear lever, it could even turn out to be tax exempt!

You'd want to see the chassis number I think. Everything about the interior suggests an early ('71/'72) 3500S. The seats are the ambla backed type and that steering wheel was only around on the early ones, as was the gear lever. Not much to give it away on the outside except for the obviously replaced bootlid.
Does anyone else think that trans tunnel looks a little wide for an S? Or is that just me?
I'm sure this car's been discussed on here before.

You could have hit the nail on the head there Kiwi.
The chassis number of this car is 45231294E, which unless I am mistaken suggests a RHD Export Automatic.
Anyone know an approximate build date for that chassis number?.

That chassis number would put the car right up near the end - according to the JT book the highest chassis number in the 451/452/453/454 continuation book is 45131837.

That number I make 543 back, probably built early/mid 1976 as a export model automatic.

Cannot explain why it's Lunar Gray though, or has Ambla. A bitza methinks.

This one has been on before, maybe a year ago? I know this, because I was the one who posted it in this section of the forum - and the same conclusion of "bitza" was come to.

I believe it has Adam.

The part of the listing that has me boggling, is the implication that their Austin Cambridge is a more popular hire vehicle than a P6.
I do have a nostalgic fondness for old Farinas, but couldn't see myself choosing one for a week's hire, especially if there was a lovely V8 up for grabs in lunar grey with a manual box!

The location in that photo is quite close to me. I've never seen the car around though.
As for Farina's, I really must get around to doing something about mine:

I've got a crated factory recon' 1800 waiting to go in. I've never seen their Cambridge around either. Maybe it's more popular because more peoples dad's used to have one & it gives a more authentic 'old car' experience than the Rovers, which is definitely true.

Oh yes, that's stunning!
( I used to get taken to primary school in one occasionally when the usual Ford Prefect taxi was out of action)

Practical when she's running. I really must pull my finger out. Stunning took six months of five/six day weeks, two front wings, four doors (two new IIRC), rear D posts, rebuilt tailgates, 16x3 feet of new metal let in, various chrome bits replaced....etc, etc. As for the paint, it's two-pack, scheme to my spec so it's awesome! 8) (though the red is Triumph Cherry so not original BMC) & my brother painted it so it was family rates & he was 10 once.

Sorry...my comment didn't refer to your car...to the P6 up at the top of the thread...I would never be so rude. :)
