i lifted the engine out to day and removed the sump for a look and found that thare are no big end shells fitted :? and when i remove no 1 piston found only 2 rings fitted so am scraping that engine now

Gosh! What did the previous owner say when he sold it you? Were there any hints like head or sump not done up properly? I think I could just about stomach a "just put back together so you've got all the bits" sort of explanation. But no shells in a nominal runner !!!!!?????##**""

It must have sounded like a dachshund brood bitch with thimbles on her udders running down a cobbled street!.

That's shocking, I'm really sorry to hear that.

Hope you can find a buyer for your gaskets, and another engine, soon.

i never heard it runing went to start it but no oil presure thats what made me strip it down ,the person i got it from hadnt tryed to get it runing he a buys older cars an sells them thank you i hope i do

Chis, are any of the engine components salvageable, head etc? In case you can find a short engine

John... I worry about you.

You know things are bad when I describe an engine sounding like an onanistic skeleton in a biscuit tin, but maybe not in those words.

I haven't scrapped this 2000SC yet. You're welcome to the engine if you can collect it from Anglesey. The bottom half plus your cylinder head might get you moving.
It's been standing for 20+ years though, so will need a full strip down and probably replacement side plates (off your old engine?).

Too far from my suggestion (which was similar) but the one above sounds good :)

Could soon be sorted whilst yours is already out

The rate I'm going it'll probably be sitting on my trailer for another year, so if you change your mind or hear of someone heading back from this way, give me a shout.

That seems almost unbelievable, the engine would have sounded like a bag of spanners :? Presumably the crank will be badly damaged.

Presumably we're still talking about NPK? It always ran really well before I sold it (2nd time!) in 2000. I never had the engine apart. It had done something like 126,000 miles IIRC.

Sounds to me like the big ends went and somebody had a look and decided against it.

On my 2.2TC the big ends went after about 700 miles of ownership, very little notice other than low oil pressure at idle, next thing it's banging like... well I'm sure John could come up with something to describe that.

I dropped the sump, and there was about 1/4 inch of play in the at least one of the big ends, bearing had pretty much destroyed itself.

I binned that engine and just dropped another in.

So they can turn from perfectly good runners to scrap very quickly, I suspect somebody stitched somebody up along the way. Makes you wonder about these cars you see on ebay "Doesn't run but it's probably just the coil..." Yeah right !

Shame to see you selling the car, but you can only take so much, and I know things are very tight for a lot of people at the moment.
