2200 TC Gearbox tapping

Hello all

I've just bought a 75 TC and there is an issue with the gearbox. The previous owner replaced it with (an apparently ) good unit because the 2,3. and 4th gears in the last box were very noisy. The current box is however making a loud tapping noise in all gears, only stopping when the clutch is depressed or when in neutral. It sounds like a lay shaft problem to me but I was wondering if somebody had another opinion ?

All gear selection is smooth and apart from the noise, the car drives great.

Any help would be appreciated and if it is the box then I will find a better one.

Thanks

If the noise is only there when the car is being driven, but disappears when you put your foot on the clutch (at a standstill, or coasting when moving) or put it in neutral in the same two scenarios then it's an internal gearbox fault.

I think you are probably right. It sounds like a loud camshaft noise but coming from the gear box.

Looks a like change is on the cards

Is it the gear lever rattling? Mine does this, took me ages to work out where it was coming from. It stops when I hold the gear lever.

Hi Tom

No, it does it regardless of whether you hold the stick or not. It sounds like a loud camshaft type noise coming from the box in all gears. Put it in nuetral and it stops , put the clutch in and it stops

In neutral the 1st motion shaft, layshaft and constant mesh gears are all turning with the engine, so I would suggest it is possibly a broken mainshaft bearing.

I've got a gearbox from a low mileage car in the shed. It's been drained for a few years, but the mainshaft seems tight - ie, no play.
