2200SC HIF16 Carb possible problem

Hello all

I have been a member for a couple of yrs now but I have only just joined/registered for the forum.I was hopeing someone might be able to help or advise me with a problem I have had with the car ever since I aquired it 3 yrs ago.Basically it has a hot start problem. The car runs perfectly on a run or from cold, but if it has been on a run and has got up to temperature and I leave it for usually between 15 mins to 50 mins it will start no problem but within a minute or 2 it will cut out and not start again until it has cooled a bit.

Over the years I have tried lots of different things such as replacing points.condenser, coil, plugs, petrol pump refurbished, then I was told it may be a fuel vapourisation problem so I have re-routed the fuel line further from the engine, cleaned out the bottom/float bit of carb and finally I installed a kenlowe fan.I keep thinking that the problem is resolved and it certainly happens less now.But I still break down occasionally and I am getting to the stage where I am frightened to take the car out if I know i have to do multiple stops due to the risk of breakdown.

Any advice will be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance Dave( Bristol area)

Hi

Yes the heatshield is fitted and I have also wrapped the exhaust and manifold in the engine bay with a heat wrap tape to lower the temperature still further.

Thanks Dave

All I can suggest then is try and get the problem to happen at home, and then when it does check through all the normal suspects (spark, fuel etc.) to see which one you haven't got.

Thanks for that.I have got the car to do this in the garage, trouble is I am an enthusiastic amateur if you know what I mean.I am pretty sure it is not electrical as I have replaced most thing on that side once or twice.

I am pretty sure it is fuel/vapourisation related, but don't really know how to prove this conclusively.I don't really know the protocool for this forum site, but I am hopeing that if I leave this on for a couple of weeks that people might put some suggestions on and then I will decide what to do as it is not urgent. But I would like to finally resolve the problem even if it means sending the carb off for a complete rebuild., but I don't want to do this if I am along the wrong track as the car runs so smoothly apart from this problem

Thanks for your advice Dave

Does your engine run hot ? Could you wire the Kenlowe so it comes on after the engine is turned off if the underbonnet temperature rises ?

Hi

No the engine never runs over hot and I have got the kenlowe wired so that it comes on if the engine gets hot.It usually runs for another 7 or 8 mins after I have taken the car on a run and got it right up to temperature.

Thanks anyway Dave

i once had this problem on a mini with the metro carb fitted [similer to p6] and as you had done everything i could think of untill a mate said check the float needle i did this and it was getting stuck in the closed possision so alouing no fuel to get through when cold it dropped and everything worked ok :D it didnt do it all the time but to cure it a put a diffrent carb on and didnt have anymore issuse with it

Hi

Thanks for last reply.I too think it is probably something to do with the carb, unless anyone suggests anything else in the next few days.I think it may try to get a new carb or get it refurished.

Thanks for all the advice

Dave

I think Bungi has the most likely answer! Your symptoms shout fuel starvation, yet the SC does not usualy suffer from this and you have done all the right things. No reason to change the carb for this alone - why not visit http://www.burlen.co.uk/ where there is lots of information, plus they can sell you the bits you need to replace the float and needle in the carb you've got, http://www.sucarb.co.uk/ExplodedImageClassic.aspx?ProductId=10714. Perhaps a good idea to buy a full overhaul kit while you're at it? With an SC setting the carb up after overhaul is easy, especially if you have a Colourtune plug. No need to read the reams I and others have written elsewhere on twin carbs!

Thanks very much to Bungi and Chrisy I think I will get a kit and have a go at rebuilding/refurbishing the carb myself as I would like to know how it all works after all the grief and expense it has given me.Having a spare carb to do the rebuild will give me a lot of confidence as i am no mechanic.

Many thanks again guys

Kind regards Dave

Hi Dave

My '67 2000 sc suffered from this for years !! I got used to living with it until this year when i had her MOT'd at a different garage and they also tuned the car on a rolling road ! A bit extravagant i thought but what the hell i thought i would give her a treat and would u believe she now starts on the "button" every time it has completely cured the hot starting probs i had for years , basically i think the timing was slightly out and they adjusted it on the advance / retard screw , this seems to have made a big difference to the way she runs and in fact in 17 yrs of ownership she has never run better !
I hope this helps

All the best

Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for the message.I am even more unsure now.I think I will still fit a new rebuilt carb, although the car runs so smoothly normally, but if it happens after I have done the work I will certainly consider getting an expert to check the overall tune.

Thanks again any advice greatfully recieved Dave
