2200TC : on the road again

Hi,
I bought my 2200TC to use some parts on my 3500S... But this car is too good to be disassembled.
So, i decided to repait it.
Now I use the car every day.
A rolling or friction sound appeared in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear ; I will adjust the clutch receiver again and hope i don'ty need to remove the gear box.
I want to use this car for a trip to Portugal with my local club.

I still used the car today: the noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear and reversing suggests that there are bearings problems.
Is it difficult to do ?
Could someone tell me where to find the parts and which parts i need to restore the box (TC).
Thank you , i never retored gearbox before.

I still try to prepare my car for a long trip... and to be an every day car.

Bonjour Pierre, (ou Range 19, non? ;) )

You need to take the gearbox out and replace at least the layshaft bearings.
I had done it at home, alone, and the most difficult part was removing / refitting the gearbox from the car because:
A) I didn't had an engine hoist to take it out along with the engine
B) I didn't had a car lift, so i could only work with the car on stands (not so nice).

The gearbox is relatively simple to take apart, but i suggest that you follow the factory workshop manual, especialy on reassembly, in order to keep all the correct tolerances.
Since you will take it apart, it makes sense to replace not only the layshaft bearings, but also the input shaft one, as they are not really expensive. I don't remember any part numbers, but at least 8 years ago it was no problem for my local SKF shop to find replacements in decent quality when i showed them the old ones. The rear maishaft one is rather more difficult, because it is not really common. When i did rebuild the gearbox i could not find this one, so i left it alone. Now, i think that Wadhams have it, but if i remember correctly the price is close to £100! So if it feels to be OK, you can leave it alone. My TC has done almost 170,000 Kms since the rebuilt, and is still quiet. Also it worth checking the synchro rings, decent ones will improve the feel of the change. Last but not least, since you will have the gearbox out, it's a shame to forget to change the bushes on the gearlever remote, that will stop the lever from rattling.

Bonjour Demetris (oui ;) )

Thank you for your complete answer.
Fortunately, there is no noise in 4th gear.

I'd like to work on the gearbox after the Portugal trip (3500km). Do you think there is a danger to drive the car for so much kilometers, the noise is not very important but increases when the gearbox is hot.

OK, without hearing it, i cannot tell you much.
When i bought my TC, it was indeed noisy in 1, 2 and 3, but not alarmingly so. I used the car normally for a year and a half and about 10,000 Kms before i did the repair.
Do you know what oil is in there? Normally it should have engine oil (20W50), but when it was worn i run it with gear oil 80W90. When cold the gearchanges were slower than normal, but as far as i remember it reduced the noise. Now instead of the gear oil, i believe the best solution is a very high quality motorcycle synthetic oil, 10W50 or 15W50. Motorcycles share the same oil between engines and gearboxes, so this oil can handle the stresses of the gearbox better. So if you haven't done already, do a gearbox oil change. It only takes just less than 1 litre.

When i bought the car, it didn't run at all.
Just after restarted the car, i wanted to drain gearbox oil and... it was empty!!!
i used Millers oil 20W50, 1 liter. I will drain it again.

Thank you very much for your help Demetris.

If that's the oil designed to be used in the mini with integral gearbox then that's a good choice of oil.

True, but i am worried more from the fact that the gearbox was found empty!
Maybe the previous owner run it a little like this, hence the noisy nature of it!

No oil is going to overcome damage caused by that if that's the case.

Another thing for the OP to check is that all the grommets and access panels in the tunnel are fitted correctly. With those out of place, and the all-alloy construction of the box, they can be very noisy inside the car, but not necessarily noisy in the damaged sense.

I became friend with the seller.I'm sure the car didn't run without oil in the gearbox but was parked like this.
I can't explain it correctly in english, but the seller gave the car to a mechanic for a long time and can't use it when it come back. He probably didn't finish the work.
The grommets are in place.
