2200TC will not start

Guy's

not been on here for a long while and to my shame I have neglected my trusty 2200TC (Chatterbox)! she will now not start for love nore money, I've had the carbs off and the exhaust to be able to fit a NOS manifold and the next pipe along. That wasn't the reason I took the carbs off it was just the exhaust came along at the right time.
To me it seemed like fuel, either muck in it or the pump failed, anyway two new pumps later it still wont start, it seems to be getting fuel, and there seems to be a spark but no vroom vroom!
I only got her back together today so I have not rechecked everything yet, but I cleaned out the carbs and checked the jets, then refitted everything, I have a service kit that I might try next, any ideas?

I've been thinking about a spare set of carbs and trying them at least then I'll have a spare set whilst I get the others rebuilt, she has always since I had her tended to throw petrol in the oil, i'm hoping the new fuel pump cures this.

Any advice welcome as i'm fed up with pushing the old girl around

Not sure how long yours has not run but a few times I have had the condenser fail with these exact symptoms. When Cranking there is fuel at carbs and spark at plugs but will not start. Try changing it.

Tried the condenser, can't say whether or not it made a difference, cleaned all the plugs and reset the gap, she looked like she wanted to try. I ended up removing the air filter and could see one of the carb plungers was stuck up in the top of the body of the carb.
I freed this off then gave both carbs a squirt with easy start, then it definately tried to go, after a while it did fire on it's own but only for a few seconds and somewhat rough.

I'll have to wait until Wednesday now, when I can recharge the battery and get some fresh fuel.

Probably a while, I,ve been slowly clearing it out, what's left is now mixed with fresh fuel, it would seem fuel is getting to the carbs but not through them, plugs are dry after I,ve tried starting, tried new coil, rotor arm etc, convinced it,s the carbs though.
Might try a computer tune guy I know, running out of patience now, either that or try something a bit radical like a BMW diesel conversion, that might make it more user friendly!

Hi Ian

Remove the fuel pipe from the carbs and put the end into a jar. Operate the fuel pump priming lever and check for fuel flow.
Reattach the pipe and try to prime the carbs with the fuel pump priming lever again. You should be able to hear fuel filling the float bowls. When full the lever will go slack. Well that's how it should work! Its possible the float needle valves are gummed up and not opening.

On the 2200TC with the HIF6 carbs its very difficult to get at the float assembly with the carbs in place. If the above test does not go well I'd be inclined to pull the carbs again and strip and clean the float bowls.

Hi Pat

thanks for that, i came to the same comclusion, i'm going to pull the carbs tomorrow and fit the service kits I have, then we'll try again, thanks for the help, i'll let you know how I get on

Success after stripping back the carbs and blowing them out with an air line I prepared them to receive some of the service kit parts I had. Fitteded two new needles and the new valves from the CSK 17/83 kits, I also set the floats as per manual, put everything back together and first turn of the key she burst into life!

First time she has run in above a twelve month, ran nicely up to temperature, I#ll give her a good clean next and then it's two new front shockers and then MOT,

Anyone got some Front Shockers believe originals are difficult to come across?

thanks for the help

Well done that man!

OE front shocks are rare now. Winn's and jrw do adjustable ones though.

Hope to see chatterbox out and about soon.

Pat

Congratulations ! !
Its a real buzz when you get a result like that after so much hassle, isn't it - especially with twin carbs.

John

Yes, I was quite relieved when she burst into life, MOT next on the list of things to do, hence the front shocks, my aim is to sort her out over the winter and get out and about next season, she wont be out over the winter, one has Landrovers for that

I will have to come and see Chatterbox again when she's on the road. I'm glad you got her running well, she was always a bit slow to start - I fail to remember, has she had a new bottom end?
