3500 auto roof question

Hi there ,
this is my first post on this forum, as being the new owner of a 1976 rover pb6 automatic car.
It is red with a black roof that has obviously been resprayed at some point?
Q: did this model originally have a vynal covering on the roof, the same as the rear door/back window areas?
Peter

By 1976 in the UK 3500 autos came with a vinyl roof as standard. IIRC it started late 1973 with the intro of the BW65.

Harvey's memory is okay ;). Introduced for '74 model year, also tinted windows etc as well as BW65 and lower compression engine.

My 74 was that spec. sundym, vinyl roof, boxpleat, later rocker style rear screen switch but still had the BW35 and high compression.

The 3500s when introduced in71 came with a black/ Brown roof covering in a course grain called huntsman ( including the side pillar parts)
Early series 2 2000/ 2200/3500 only had the side pillars covered in a standard fine grain.
Later autos ( BW 65) and all 3500s models had huntsman type covering.
Not sure if the very last 2200 had roofs covered, may have been a extra as I have seen some.
Clive.

always thought the vinyl roof was optional . however if it was fitted and is no longer there? may have bene damaged ? peeling? and removed. repaint needed for roof in that case. getting dried glue off would be fun.(not)

Hi there all, thank you all for your interesting replys.
The next logical question is what are the chances of being able to have the roof recovered in Vinyl again to bring the car back to original?
Is there a special type of Vinyl that would withstand the vigor's of the Australian heat, at the moment its up in the high 30's, 44 in my shed.
Would contact adhesive do the job , any special type of adhesive? so many questions and I haven't even started yet!
Peter

If your car is a New Zealand assembled one, which most sold in Australia in that period were, it would not have had a vinyl roof cover.

Any motor trimming business worth their salt will fix a vinyl roof for you. There are some high quality materials out there to choose from.
Did one yonks ago on a Leyland P76. Makes the interior of the car hotter though- you have been warned.

now thinking that a white roof would look nice, its 40 deg C here and too hot to drive a car without air conditioning.....phew
now wondering if its possible to find and fit air to the car, any takers on this mod?
Peter

A white roof won't do any harm to cooling. Whip out the roof lining and stick some insulation up there, too.
As for aircon, I am sure that a modern car's system could be made to fit, but the issue of the controls is beyond my reach right now. My car has the aftermarket aircon and the chop-job on the dash is really unappealing to me.

aircon is a specialist job so probably needs a lot more investigation before taking the plunge, I wonder if a unit from a later model rover would fit? has anyone attempted this?

Have a word with Mike Coombs on this forum - he may be able to give you some info on adding A/C and he's down under so will have local knowledge on parts/suppliers, etc.

Actually i have a couple of underdash systems sitting on a shelf, the reasonably neat centre console replacement type. they are from NZ built cars that had them instead of the proper factory ones. If you Pm me we can arrange a time to view.

Mike,
Could you post up some pics of what they look like, please? I have to contend with low 40s on a bad day, so when the old girl is back on the road aircon will have to be functional.
