3500 P6 Wanted

As my search for the right car has drawn a blank for three months, I think it's best to post here & cover all angles.

Sought for weekly driver, European rallying and UK Hillclimb events:

Rover P6 3500
All years considered up to and including 1975. (Don't care about tax free status - this is to qualify for certain historic events).
Must be solid; bodywork is not my forte so the base unit must be as free of rust as possible.
Either auto or already converted to a 5 speed (LT77/R308).
Running engine & MOT - engine will be tweaked and hopefully rebuilt so doesn't have to be show winning.
Interior respectable - might be replaced in the future if dismal.

I unfortunately cannot afford a respray and so colour is important - I simply cannot live with a brown, almond, yellow or white car. All others considered.

My budget is up to £3500 if boxes are ticked.

I am located in London but will travel for the right car.

If you have a 3500 languishing in a garage, know someone about to ebay a good one or just spot one in a local rag please let me know by PM - thanks in advance.

You've forgotten to put your budget down, IMHO you have shut a lot of doors in your critieria :?

I agree. It's all a matter of choice, but I wouldn't even consider turning down a good (or any, come to that) car because of the colour. It's just not an issue for me. Some look better than others, agreed & green hasn't been the luckiest car colour for me, but still......!

Could be a link here.

You don't know what you're missing

Good luck in your search

Dave

As others have said, you have dismissed alot of cars their, you will find one meeting your criteria hope its sooner than alot later

Unfortunatley most cars of this era were in these colours as they were the colours to have. I wouldn't normally go for a white car but my one was in such good condition the colour became unimportant and as the others have said before me condition is far more important than the colour, there are a lot of ropey cars out there with many hidden problems.
Best of luck in the search though :)

If you're prepared to spray it yourself, then a respray doesn't have to cost more than about £100. You can get enough paint for a full respray off ebay for £60-£70, as long as you don't mind a common modern colour, or black.

If you've got sound paint to start with then it's just a matter of keying the paint, masking up and whacking it on. If you get plenty of coats on you can flat back later and get a really good finish.

Not a show winning concours job, but plenty good enough for a semi-racing car, and you should have enough paint left over to touch up the inevitable scrapes.

That seems like the way forward.

I had to replace the interior in mine as it was very musty due to a leak and the drivers seat had sagged. I found a replacement ambla interior and that cost me £400 plus the travel costs to go and get it, and then a LOT of elbow grease just to get it looking good again, but it was definately worth it. A quick colour change may be easier than finding then changing the interior.

Good luck with the search :D

You've only ruled out 4 colours which still leaves the Reds, Blues, Paprika, Greys, Greens and Black. There are several shades of these lot too to choose from.

Something will turn up and best to be happy with your purchase IMO

If you find a car you like with an interior you can live with.... Just swap all the panels for a set of 2nd hand ones in an outside colour you like!

Chris

Thanks everybody- I have added my budget; a rather appropriate figure.

I appreciate the colour point but I am prepared to wait for the right car to come along. Gives me more time to save for improvements and parts along the way!

I am abysmal at spraying but will investigate.

Very good Harvey , what would you set aside for the gear box conversion 35 or 65 quid :?

Without fail, I'd always opt for the higher figure, given the choice. 66 would be better still.
