3500S gearbox leak

Is the manual gearbox on the 3500S prone to leaking. I seem to have one. I've had a look but can't seem to work out where it's coming from. I can see where it's been dripping onto the exhaust. Wonder if there is a place that they do leak or a gasket that might need renewing

If you can powerwash the gearbox and then roadtest you should be able to get a good idea where it's leaking from. The rear gaskets and tailshaft seal can be replaced with the box in the car, but the rest need to have the gearbox removed to change them.

Had a good look at the gearbox today the leak is certainly from the rear of the box either the out put shaft or the gasket near to the rear. It could be the output shaft area as there is oil all over suggesting it's getting spun around. Harveyp6 you mentioned this could be done with the gear box in site. I presume the exhaust needs to come off and the rear gear box mount to get access. I've never done anything like this before (my last car was an Austin a30!)

Exhaust front pipes and prop off, then support the box and remove the rear mounting and crossmember. Undo the flange bolt and remove the flange, then undo the bolts around the rear housing and remove that. Then the oil pump plate comes off. There are two gaskets, one either side of the oil pump plate. If those are leaking it's important to make sure that the bolt that secures the plate that locates the reverse idler shaft DOESN'T have a washer on it.

Refit the gaskets with a smear of Blue Hylomar.

Thanks so much for that. I think that will be a job for when I take the car off the road for the winter. Aymt the moment I've only had the car 2 months and using it as daily transport can't bring myself to lay her up yet

When you do it also make a note of how tight (or loose) the rear flange nut is.

Should it be a certain tightness. It might already be loose which could be a source my problem I'm told

The torque figure will be in the WM. If it feels as though it was loose when you undo it then try to set it to the specified torque figure, if it's torques up and the box still turns over freely then that may be your speedo issue If the box locks up at the specified torque then you've got real problems.
