3500s propshaft lining up (aka harvey help i messed up again)

Hi all, Back in jan I took off the propshaft on my 3500s so I could do the gear remote and a few other bits. I dutifuly marked up both ends (the diff end and the sliding joint as I couldn't get the nose bolts undone) half way through removing it I realised I had stupidly marked the locking ring that freely rotates with no relation to anything. so I remarked the sliding joint and removed the shaft.

today I go back to put it on and cant find the marks on the gearbox end :(( so after much swearing and scrubbing with a wire brush and emery paper I found the two arrows. lined them up so they were pointing at each other and turned the shaft so that one of the uj half's was vertical and checked the other end. Typically it was miles away from vertical. nearly 45 degrees. I tried several more times each with the same result. I looked at a spare prop shaft my friend had and with the arrows in line the uj's line up.

in the end I managed to get the nose disconnected from the gearbox so I could line it up on the bench. using a set square and ruler the arrows were in line but the uj's weren't. if I did it so the uj's were in line the arrows are 45 degrees out.

What am is going on.... are the uj's not supposed to be vertical at both ends??? or is it posable I have a mismatched shaft and I just need to set it so they are in line???

hope this makes some kind of sense

Line up the arrows and the prop joints will be out of line, and that's how they should be. Rovers eh?......... You just gotta luv 'em.

No, AFAIK 2000/2200 was the same. ISTR it's because the driveshafts are of equal length, so the pinion isn't on the centreline of the car, so that was compensated for by offsetting the UJ's. Very early and later V8's had a different angle of offset.

ok how were the propshafts "made" in relation to the arrows. were the arrows marked after the sliding section was partnered with the rest so u have a matched pair??? I now cant get the arrows aligned wondering if I have a "unmatched pair"

The arrow points don't always line up exactly but the points are normally pretty close. If you look at the factory workshop manual for the V8 it shows the two angles of offset. The short yokes always have the arrow in the same place, in line with the grease nipple, so you shouldn't be able to get a mismatch.

The sliding yoke and it's splined where marked as a pair. The angle mismatch was created between the front yoke and spline and the rear yoke when the propshaft tube and ends were jigged up and welded. So any sliding yoke will properly fit any driveshaft.

thanks for all the input guys I will align the arrows as best I can and go from there. Im just annoyed with myself that I didn't mark the dang thing properly in the first place.

many thanks
