5-speed box

Evening all,

Still on my medium-to-long term wishlist for Occie..... :)

Given the right bellhousing of course, would an LT77 from a 6-cylinder SD1 be OK for a V8? What differences are there?

For instance, this from a 2300 or 2600....

Yes. To all intents and purposes it's the same thing. Speedo driven gear may be different to that on the V8 depending on the diff ratio in the SD1 it came from, but you'll be recalibrating the speedo anyway. The V8 bellhousing is the expensive part. Try and get as late a box as possible, as the 5th gear ratio was better on the later ones. IIRC diesels had a really high 5th.

Don't forget that you will also need the V8 release bearing sleeve and the clutch fork pivot pin as both of these are longer.
I fitted a gearbox from a 2600 into our 'S' a few years back when the original was smashed to smithereens. The gearbox cost me $20.00, unfortunately the bellhousing cost me $400.00! I really regretted doing it though as I think the shift action on the SD1 'box is horrible and has ruined the car.

Mine was bad when I got it but I took the thick gooey EP oil out, washed it out with white spirit, then again with a blend of white spirit and Redline MTL, then emptied it out again and filled it with neat Readline MTL

It has transformed the box into a right slick shifter.

I don't know if you can get this oil over there but it really does make a difference.

Harvey,
does that just apply to the SD1 2400TD box or did the diesel freight rover have a high ratio?
Regards,
Dave

No, AFAIK it's only the SD1 diesels, and the Freight Rovers have very low first and second gear ratios as well to enable what could well be 3500kg moving from a standstill, so although they will fit, they aren't the ideal choice.

Hi, i have the chance to buy a 5 speed gearbox and bellhousing from a Rover SD1 for my P6. They have the serial codes BL6 V3334 on the gearbox itself and FRC 0133CA BSK1 on the bell housing - can someone confirm they are suitable? Ta.
