Well, this morning I trundled into Detroit with my camera...

Michigan central station, Detroit. It was built in 1912-1913, although the upper floors were never completed or used. It was closed in January 1988 and has not been used since.

This is a suburb less approx 1 mile from downtown Detroit.

Again, only a mile or two from the downtown area:

This used to be all houses...

Only two houses left on this road...

and still so close to the central area...

Some roads are just covered in litter, rubbish and debris.

Even the biggest houses are not immune...

There are still some people living here - and if you go a couple of blocks it appears almost normal again :)

Some houses still even have contents and stuff in them.

Although many are returning to nature quite fast.

13571_10153182565605565_1300461007_n.jpg

and many have been hit by arsonists...

1002590_10153182569285565_1110341811_n.jpg

I'm told many empty houses are burnt by the neighbours, to prevent drug dealing or other problem residents moving in - I don't know if there is any truth to this...

and finally, heading out past the (in)famous:

It's a strange, sombre place.
You can go through areas like those above, and a couple of blocks later everything seems quite presentable. There are still some residents who have clearly been there a while and are still going about life as usual.

Let's hope history learns from this place :)

Very interesting photos. I had heard that the city centre had some very run down areas, and saw a TV programme on the Detroit music scene which showed much the same

Great photos Jim! It almost looks like a ghost town in many of them. Wide roads and yet not even cars parked.

Ron.

In a way it's reminiscent of parts of London and the suburbs in the years just after WW2.
Burnt-out, derelict or boarded-up buildings, rampant shrubbery, few vehicles on the streets (50 miles a month petrol ration!)
Looks like Detroit has been devastated by an economic Luftwaffe!
BUT back in the battered London of the 40s, there were always people about.
Even given that it is early morning, the Detroit streets are unpopulated.
Very sobering.
John

So Asian cars really do count as an apocolypse - and Detroit today is definitely after it!

Just as well I didn't drop round this afternoon as I'd planned....

We ought to see what sort of armoured behemouth your being driven around in..... Not based on Foirward Control 101 I don't suppose?

Chris

That is really sobering to see. It also makes sense now how Detroit had to file for bankruptcy
protection recently. Some really nice old buildings there.
It was also the home of the MOTOWN Records label that eventually ended up as a part of
Universal Music Group via some convoluted incarnations along the way.

Don't underestimate how dangerous Detroit is; when I was there in '99 ( having driven over the Bridge from Windsor, Ontario ) I noticed drivers completely ignoring traffic signals downtown and was told later that to stop for a Red light was to invite a carjacking

I stopped to fill up at a gas station and there was bulletproof glass behind bulletproof glass, the clerk pushed a long sliding drawer towards me so I could prepay for the fill up and talked to me over an intercom. One of the other customers there, driving a beat-to-hell American car that had had more hits than Elvis, came over and said: "Y'know you REALLY shouldn't be here..." and once he'd worked out from my accent that I indeed wasn't from there ( with me being a Caucasian male was pretty much a given anyway ) he kindly directed me to the nearest freeway exit to get back to Canada

Couldn't get back fast enough, Detroit looked like Hell on Earth

I'm told that the rest of Michigan State more than makes up for Detroit's blight, but I'm not in any hurry to go back and find out...

Mmmm Sheffield.... Substitute crack cocaine for the beer and then give them all guns....... Then you're getting near

I fully understand GW's reaction to the place!

Chris

prepay for the fill up
Even in some of the rougher parts of the UK, I haven't come across that one. The glass, intercom and drawer yes but not having to pay for fuel in advance.

I think most of our petrol stations rely on security cameras for anyone who drives off without paying. They just get the registration and report them to the police. However, there are ways around this. A few years back my wife was at a petrol station and noticed a car driving in with rags wrapped over the registration plates. Sure enough, the guy filled up and then made a hasty exit  .

http://www.hallamfm.co.uk/news/local/fi ... -shooting/ just down the road from here.

Our road to work was closed recently because a rival gang member had wandered into a neighbouring area and was driven over and killed by locals.

A nearby neighbour in Hoyland, where I live, heard someone trying to steal his car, and went outside to investigate. He was killed by the burglar.

To be honest, I was referring to the state of the place, not the hooligan element, but it is pretty rough around here.

I'll take some pics :)

Richard

Great pictures, very sobering indeed. Be careful with your camera going round Sheffield though Richard  RVW's last owner parked her on the Moor for the annual car show last year, I had to rescue her from then on! :p

... ...
... ...

Detroit seems to be especially notorious, even by US measures, for having neighborhoods where police does not come... .

Thanks folks, glad you like the pics :)

I went in to Detroit at around 6AM, and was out by 8AM... by 8AM the few people that were about were giving me looks. I'd not want to be in some of those areas in the evenings...

They don't stretch to paying for a driver, but this is my rental car for my time out here...

It's a Ford Taurus, Granada sized, so bigger than the Fusion/Mondeo we get in the UK. 3.5V6 with front wheel drive and autobox.

Quite comfy 8)
