I have taken the crome covering off the nearside A post and discovered its completely rotton, so bad thats its unservicable and i certainly don't want to be putting filler in it because its structual and its definately not fill-able. i know this is a servicable part because there are 2 seams where its been welded in place so i was wondering if anybody on here has a p6 that they are breaking or is going to the scrap yard that they wouldnt mind cutting this part out for me because it would not be easy to fabricate a piece of metal to go there. if you require a picture to see what i mean just say and il post one up, just haven't taken a picture yet. oh BTW its a series 2 p6, not that i know if its any different on the series one. anyway thanks to anyone who can help me here.

Regards

Buy a breaker ... keep an eye out on e bay. ALl non V8s are cheap as chips. Try and get a clean one, view it and look at what it has in way of spares. If yours is that rotten, why dont you reshell it. I do know a fella on
here called the rovering member has a breaker he is stripping. Hes in London, go and see him with your angle grinder.

thanks mate. its a real shame because everything else is really solid but it just looks like maybe the drain channel on the A post has become blocked and has been that way for some time, allowing water build up which has just sat there and eaten the metal. im going to have a look at a rover 3500 soon anyway so even if its a complete basket case il probs still get it for spares, but if its ok i wont break it, just see what its like really. thats near london so maybe i will get onto the rovering member anyway. thanks for your help

It's more a donor car which I take bits off of as I need them. I don't really want to remove an A-post & have a floppy car in the garage. I'm in no hurry to send it to the scrapper at the moment though if I was you'd be welcome to it's A-post. You need one who's final journey is imminent I think.

I am a bit confused, Can you post the photo.

I can't think of which chrome cover there is on the A-post. The door hinges and the suspension mounts through the A-post and the only bits of shiny trim would be the door tread plate.

hello.
yeah thats fair enough rovering member :) thanks anyway.
Damn who told me it was an A post, iv just made a massive mistake, it is infact the nearside windscreen pillar which i dunno what letter "post" that is
well here you go here is the attached picture of it :)
if anyone could let me know what the proper name is for that pillar id appreciate it, or is it just a windcreen pillar?

I would call that the roof pillar, but it is the top of the A-post.

The A-post where the door hinges can rust badly which Is why I was confused.

I had a look at the parts book and it shows 366318 Gusset screen pillar. You will probably want to remove the roof to do a good repair, You may know that it is bolted on.

Ian at rover classics has a listing for an A-post £29, looks like a full thing so might be what you need but would need trimmed to suit the repair, I suspect that you might still need the gusset panel to.

brilliant cheers. yeah i know the roof bolts on, may need taking off anyway to give everything a good clean under there and sort out anymore corrosion that could be hidden by it.

Unfortunately these things do not rot in isolation. I would take the roof skin off and look under it and all of the chrome trims that cover the roof pillars. ALso the chrome along the gutter, I bety you find a lot of rot.

My base unit was as solid as a rock and never welded, but I have put in loads of little plates in these places, in an otherwise rock solid car.

Why not roof chop another car?

yeah iv taken off the chrome along the guttering off, bit rusty but will be fine, no welding needed there, its just that bit thats really gone. also the rear roof post on the same side needs a plate welded onto it, but as its hidden anyway and not too bad for shape thats not a problem welding a plate on it.. i wish i could weld though, rather than pay loads of money for someone else to do it.

i will see what im going to do but probs wont go roof chopping, il just see what happens anyway.
cheers

just a small update.
GUESS WHAT I FOUND???
yep you guessed right, the other sides exactly the same :(
damn it, im fed up of finding corrosion :|

You did read the Rover badge on the back before you bought it ???

Welding is not a particularly difficult skill to learn, especially basic mig welding on this type of structure, if you find much more rot you may find it cheaper to buy a welder and learn to use it, then your ready for any future jobs, plus numerous jobs around the home, I built some decking last year and made a welded steel frame using some old pallet racking beams instead of the usual wooden frame, it's absolutely rock solid !
