Ah Rollocks!!

Had a major ballache this morning driving to work in the rover, the bloody bonnet flipped up at 65mph

Makes you concentrate pretty quickly and sit a little higher on your seat I can tell you especially when it happened when I was changing to the outside lane of a dual carriageway in pretty shitty weather  To top it off it took out the fuse for the wipers and heater blower just to make sure getting it back home was as much fun as the bonnet flipping

Anyone have a spare series 1 bonnet in venetian red hanging about, I thought not  seriously anybody got a spare bonnet lying around that would fit????

Ouch. Glad you're ok. Did it go through both stages of the catch?
Yeah it did which I found really weird, however at home tonight taking a closer look after an underwear change and a day at work it looks some scrote may have tried to get the badge off the front grill as it is showing some leverage marks so maybe that contributed, who knows :? Thankfully the ariel stopped the roof/screen taking the brunt of the hit so that was a positive thing, I think the hinges have pulled a bit but I've got some of these spare a long with every panel but a bonnet

Nasty. I remember the same thing happening on a motorway to a friend's Mexico Brown 2200TC back in the eighties. Of course back then he could simply select one the right colour from a scrapyard.

Glad you are OK - that could have been a bit nasty.

Must admit I have noticed my bonnet flexing a bit at speed. It moves slighty at the front edges and I assumed this was down to the bonnet being made of light/flexible aluminium. Are P6's prone to bonnet flexing or "flipping"? It sounds very scary. Has anyone done ever done any mod's to improve the safety of the bonnet catches :?: I suppose the rally guys use these locking catches for this kind problem but I wouldn't want to put them on my car.

I've seen plenty go over, and as said earlier, always had a bonnet in stock (often in the right colour) back in the good old days, but I don't ever remember it happening if the safety catch wasn't siezed.

My bonnet moves a bit in high wind or when a big lorry goes past. Majority of the movement is from the hinges though. If it's gonna go it's gonna go....

it's a real shame as it was a cracking bonnet aswell

still looks as though I should be able to get a good series 1 bonnet so that's great news. Gives me an excuse now to get the compressor and spraygun out :D

Glad you got a new bonnet OK.

You could always fit some fake intake scoops to the new bonnet, spray it matt black (to make it look like carbon fibre) and go for a real boy racer look :D

Given some of the responses on P6 bonnet flipping, I am now considering a periscope. Idea being that, in event of bonnet flip, you just "up persiscope" and can continue driving normally. :D

Soudns like making sure the catch is fully working isnt an option - it's a necessity. Also making sure the rubbers for the bonnet height arent too high at guess too???

PAE did develop a habit of the bonnet coming slightly open but being caught by the second catch. Problem went away when the snapped drivers side front spring was replaced...

Rich.

It is scary, isn't it? It's not happened to me in the P6, but a few times in my Mini, normally at terminal velocity too, one got to be a dab hand steering via the lane next door while negotiating a rapid lane change to get to the shoulder.
Young and dumb and full of...

Had my bonnet come up on a BMW 2002 Turbo. It's a reverse opening system that has no safety catch
Everyone wants a look under it and you eventually forget to lock it down
Went tearing off down the road and it gets pulled up by the vacuum :|
Luckily I thought not to brake too hard as it would have only got worse and it gently came back to rest
Not a nice sensation though :(

Here's a Mini owner that's not taking any chances of losing their hood! Compulsory items in many motorsports events + some types are lockable, which slows thieves down

Gee, I am not liking the idea of the bonnet flying up while driving along one little bit..

When on a country road and a semi roars past going in the opposite direction, you can feel the huge wind turbulance and I often look at the bonnet and think,..gee don't you dare.....

I had heard that in the unfortunate event of a head on collision, the guards crumple, the engine and transmission drop down as opposed to going up and into the cabin...not a nice thought that one, and the bonnet is supposed to fly up and wrap around the windscreen thus helping to prevent the occupant/s from flying out. This is all supposed to happen when the impact is more than 60mph. I am sure that I speak for us all in that this is one aspect of our Rover that we never want to put to the test.

Ron.

Would be good if there was some way to add these locks that wasnt visible from outside of the car..

How about those small leather belts with which they kept the bonnet on on those pre 1960 race cars? I think that would look really good, two of those on the front corners of the bonnet... 8)

But lets be realistic, what are the chances of your bonnet actually flying away like that? I think they are rather small. :)

Bunjee strap from the arches, and they are available in an variety of colours, you can watch the bonnet open and close repeatedly like a hungry Pacman.
