alloy grille - grim!

Hallo all,
After replacing the front valance of my 2000, I want to autosol the grille. First though, I need to get what looks like 38 years worth of road grime off it! Any ideas what would shift this quickly, like maybe a dip in some lethal solvents or something!!?? Or will I have to resort to the old stiff brush with boiling watter and bubbles?!

Drew :D

How about careful brushing with a small copper(?) wire brush. This method works wonders & doesn't spoil the finish. Brush in line with the 'louvres'.

Cheers,

Phil.

You could try one of the powerfull alloy wheel cleaners. Problem with autosol is that it will produce a polished gloss finish (after it's removed the fingerprints off your fingers :D ), rather than the brushed finish it should be.

Well.....I used alloy wheel cleaner, which has shifted the build up of general crud. Trouble now is, there is still a lot of same crud in the grilles little nooks and crannies. Think It`s gonna take a lot longer than I hoped. The section between the lights for example, I can`t find anything that will get into those recesses sufficiently to get the ming out! Maybe cotton buds with nail polish remover, threre`s some black and baccy leaf overspray in there as well. Anyone got a new old stock grille!!! :p

Cellulose thinners to remove overspray etc.. Have you tried an old toothbrush to get into the corners ?

Richard,
Yeah, been using it since the start mate, you should see the state of my teeth! :D I`ve used about 3/4 of the bottle of alloy cleaner. Got some cotton buds on the go now which gets into the tricky bits easier, but theres no power available cos they just collapse after 3 seconds. It`s started to get on my wick now, so I`m leaving it as clean as I can get it for the time being. It doesn`t look half as bad as it did.

Cheers for your help.

Drew!!
IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If youve got one!! And dont tell the missus!
But stick them in the dishwasher on a hot wash with an extra tablet! and turn up the rinse aid! :p :p

Damn I forgot about that one !, apparently it works really well on alloy parts too, if you've already removed most of the crud it should be pretty safe (for the machine that is).

Unfortunately I don`t have one gents. The prison does though, but I don`t think they`d take too kindly to me smuggling in the grille off my motor!! I`ll bear it in mind though, but would they fit in a standard size washer???
