Alternative gearboxes - Modern gearboxes for P6B

Does anyone know of any alternatives to the BW35 for the P6B? I have been told the the ZF 4 speed from a Range Rover will fit the V8, since that is what is in the RR. The only problem that I can see with this is the the RR gearbox is designed to have a transfer case on the back rather than a simple output, any ideas?
Apparently, (but dont quote me) the gearbox in a lateish (90s)model Jaguar is also suitable, but again the bell housing to fit the rover V8 will be need fron the RR.
Does anyone have any other helpful tips, indeed has anyone done a conversion of this type.
All ideas, helpful hints and other support will be much appreciated!!!!

Hi Guy

Looking round the web I noticed a ZF 4 speed upgrade for R Rovers onto the RV8 (also the last of the RV8 R Rovers ?), and also that the ZF came on some Jags.
For someone looking into possabilities, then this might be a starting point for investigation, ie would a Jag G Box fit a RR RV8 bell housing ?? (and then fit on a P6). It might work, but I personally never got beond the museing stage.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks these things !

Upgrading the gearbox on P6B's seems a popular ambition of P6 owners, good hunting.

Changing the subject slightly. Many moons ago I was looking at fitting an Alfa Romeo twin cam into my S1. The alfa had a 5 speed transaxle and best of all de dion rear suspension meaning that the tranaxle could be installed in the P6 using all the Rover rear suspension with only the driveshafts needing to be modified.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have had the new kit in the old beast and the problems that I have encountered so far are; the new 4 speed ZF (out of a 1989 Jag XJ12) is longer than the old BW.
Whilst not a great problem I am having to have the prop shaft shortened to suit. The bellhousing off the Disco fitted perfectly with no swearing, head scratching or skinned knuckles! So once the new shaft is back I can road test it before pulling apart again for the long rebuild and paint job that it requires.
So if anyone else wants a go then you can pick up a good box for around $1500 at any good Jag wrecker. :)

I've started converting my 3500s to use a toyota supra 5 speed. If your interested to follow the conversion go to

I know I keep posting my website address every five minutes but I'm sure everyone will find it interesting. I know I would.

I'll be working on it every day for the next couple of weeks so will try and update every day or so.

Anyone got any comments on clearance for the new gearbox? I've gone for an inch all round minimum, sufficient or not? Speak now please or forever hold your peace as It'll all be welded up in a day or two!
