Alternative Tyre Size

whoa, steady on with the $$$ mods chris, i'll settle on wearing these tyres out first. I can live with that smallish error on the speedo, thanks for your reply, and now realise that my spare is an 80 series, I thought it was a 75 as it didn't say on the side wall, only 185HR14 and wondered why it was bigger than a 185/75 14 i had (off a mitsubishi) will try the calculator,

Regards

How can there be so much discrepancy between cars as to what tyres fit ?
If the gaps are unequal from side to side can they be equalised by adjusting the Panhard Rod between the diff carrier and the frame?

No, because both ends of that rod are fixed to the base unit.

I'll have to get under and have a look .I thought one end was fixed to the plate to which the diff is bolted by 3 bolts .Wouldn't shortening the rod pull it across a bit ?

It is bolted to the diff plate at one end and the body at the other, but shortening (or lengthening it)it will just pull it against the rear mountings. It would move it across in the extreme but that would just load up those rear mounts, and shorten their lifespan, as well as causing vibration, and put the diff out of line because short of elongating the holes in the diff crossmember there's no way of moving that across to keep it all in line, which could at the worst extent mean the car would "crab" I can see your train of thought, I just can't see any way of making it work in practice.

I've got new bushes to fit to the link .From what you are saying do I have the weight of the car on it's wheels and adjust the rod so it fits without stress ?

If you're just replacing the bushes then do just that and don't attempt to alter the length of the rod itself, I doubt that the length has been altered since it left the factory, and I would think that it will put up a bit of a fight if you try and do it now.

There's a special tool to compress the bushes on the base unit end (the front shock absorber tool) but I'm sure there's a way around it without the tool, although I've never had to as I've got most of the factory tools, including that one.

I went down to the restoration show at Stoneleigh today and there a company there called Vintage Tyres.

They had some 185 14 HR tyres from Vredestein for £90.00 plus vat and carriage.

I had a chat to them and said I would mention them on the forum, to wit they replied that anyone phoning them should mention this and they would give them a discount and send them carriage paid.

Still a bit pricey at £90.00 but look a good tyre.

Off topic as these aren't an alternative size, but I just bought a pair of 165 80 14 Uniroyals from National Tyres for 50 quid each, fitted. Seemed like a good price for a decent make. You need to order online, selecting your local branch for fitting, as the branch prices are a little higher.
