Alternator repair

Greetings!
I think I might need to replace the alternator as the battery isn't charging. I've looked at a variety of diagnosis but nothing has changed.
Are they easy to open up and repair? And what exactly and how much repair can you do on the alternators?
Not too familiar with them but my Dad says you sometimes need to replace the bushes?
Cheers
Andy

My apologies, I thought you had the later alternator.

If you have the 11AC with separate regulator, JCR should still be able to sort you out with parts. Worth giving them a call.

This separate regulator, is this a small black box where some wires come from the bottom of it? Located near the rear of the engine bay?
If this goes, would this also show no charging symptoms? This is where I am unsure, whether its the alternator, or the regulator.
Cheers

No, the regulator is up on the side in the passenger (RHD) glovebox, and looks like this:

In addition to that is a 3AW warning light control. If it's not charging you really need to follow the test procedure in the WM.

Yes I've read about this warning light, not sure where it is? I've got a S1 P6 so not sure if it came with this series?
Have a bit of searching to do I think....

The 3AW is normally in the same place on the driver's side IIRC. 11AC's are a bit more complicated to diagnose because of the 3 separate components, but unless you have good known items to substitute then you're left with running through the checklist in the WM.

for what it'ss worth the range rover alternator on mine with the build in regulator work's beautifully. I can point you at the thread if you're interested.

Hello!
Ok, I've realised the 4TR regulator in the glovebox is not there, so this might be why the alternator isn't working.
I've found one on ebay, but it only has 3 connectors to it (in the glovebox though mine seems to have 3 connectors together, then one separate one).

Any thoughts or ideas on this?
Cheers

I wonder if your alternator has been replaced at some time in the past for something other than an 11AC? Are you sure it's an 11AC? If it is, and it has worked in the past, then it must have a 4TR somewhere.

The 4TR with 4 terminals that Harvey posted is the correct one. The one with 3 won't do you any good. You need to confirm you definitely have an 11AC alternator first. If you're not sure, this is what it should look like:

This is where the 4TR resides:

and the 3AW:

The black box behind it is a solid state alternative.

Dave,

Thanks for that. Thats exactly what I needed, some pictures to better understand.
I should double check the alternator - my P6 was stopped for 30 years and had half the engine missing, so I bought second hand parts to put it together again.
The alternator has 4 wires going into it, 3 in the connector cluster, and one that goes further away on one of the nuts on the back.
The 3AW and the 4TR are both missing, and yes mine has 4 wires loose for the 4TR so I will need the one with 4 connectors.
I will double check the alternator first before buying anything. But I am at least getting somewhere!
Cheers all for the help!

Back of the 11AC

The big thick brown/white wire is the main 12V from the battery, the thinner brown/green and brown/purple are the F+ and F- field connectors to the 4TR. There is another connector that you can't see in this picture that goes to the 3AW. Ignore the other dark wire coming out from behind the thick brown/white wire. It's connected to a capacitor for noise suppression.

You can see that all the wires connect individually via spade connectors. There is no combined connector.

Hello,

OK, Alternator off the car and..... I don't know if it is the 11AC or not?
No markings on it apart from LUCAS, England, and Patented.
I need the 4TR and 3AW modules, but I just want to confirm I am getting all the right parts for the right alternator!
Cheers for the help,
Andy

OK, managed to use my eyes and locate the 11AC stamp! It was on the front part, on the rim of the cast where the pulley is.
Just need the regulators now and see if this charging issues gets sorted!
Cheers

Ordered warning light control off ebay, and the 4TR regulator off Rimmberbros.
Honestly, I haven't a clue what they are for and how the charging system works, but I know they are missing and I have the empty sockets waiting for them to be installed. Just hope I get the result I want when I hook it back up!

The light relay is needed because without it the light would drain the battery with the ignition off. The 4TR keeps the alternator on a level keel so to speak, preventing it from either creating too much voltage or amperage.

Yours
Vern
