Alternators - I GIVE UP!!!!

Hi all,

I changed the alternator on my '73 2000sc (3 pin miltiplug type - 2 large and one small spade connections) for a second hand one yesterday. (Allegedly known to be good)

My old one was permanently showing the charge light so I assumed 'New one required'
Fitted replacement. No charge light at all engine on or off!
Then the engine stopped and wouldn't restart (coincidence as I changed all the ignition components - running fine again)

With ignition on, meter on the first large pin and earth, on the alternator shows battery voltage - no ign lamp
With engine running, meter on second large pin and earth, show the same as the battery voltage - no ign lamp

So, before I fit a brand new unit from the local factor (Hella CA18H?) is this unit shot as well?

OR do I have 6ra's 4ra's and stuff which I know nothing about?

Please help..... I'm totally depressed, confused and fed up now!

Do you have an ac delco or lucas unit?

Check the small wire it feeds back to the ign lamp. if there is a break the you wont get the light on also you wont get correct charging at low RPM.

Forget it everyone.......panic over.

I looks like I should learn not to buy unknown second hand kit

Recon alternator fitted.....job done

As you were everyone!

Regardless of the fact you've fixed it now, it's worth remembering that with ACR alternators, if you earth the small wire in the multi-plug with the ignition on, the ignition light should come on, and if it doesn't it won't charge, if it does, then the fault is inside the alternator.

Thanks Harvey...
I must admit, before I fitted the recon one I earthed it to the car (with a jump lead) and plugged the plug in, flicked the ignition to ign position and on came the lamp..... this spurred me on to fitted the second unit is 2 days with a biiiiiig smile !!

Then we went cruising 8)
