Another bonnet badge

Hi brian,
as per original spec, stainless was out of the question as too difficult to bend round and would have caused too many problems and too many breakages of the plastic.

Beautiful Joseph..

You deserve to sell every single one you can get made!

No excuse now for the Concours Boys to lose marks for a scrappy badge.... :D

The only other thing that I can think of is if the red painted 'sails' will resist fading in the sun?
I know you've covered UV resistance for the actual plastic part, does that in turn protect the red colour underneath?

Hi peterB76,
yes it does. like i said in a previous listing i need someone willing to do a trial for me in australia / new zealand. once i have the badges and know all the costs if one of you out there will do this for me and contacts me direct, you can have the badge a little cheaper and any problems i will refund you the money and postage.

Hi all,
update on the backing plate. he has only made a handfull in mild steel for sample purposes, so i am waiting for the extra cost, which he said should be minimal. so i will proceed to get them made with a stainless steel back.

Excellent, great work indeed!
Should we be placing orders with you now, or just being ready to leap when you start shipping?

In a word... YES...

I would assume that the studs would also be SS but worth checking. Not that it would be much of a problem if they weren't.

Smashing looking badges. well done.

Colin

Hi,
yes the studs will be stainless the same as the backing plate.

until i sort out all the costs and find out precisely you have no need yet to place an order, allthough many thanks for wanting to do so, i appreciate it. like i said between £60.00 and £65.00 i have asked if they will be ready and delivered by the 14th may as i want to take some to beamish for the excellent rally on the 16th may ( hope most of you are going ) he has said hopefully, but if all are not done he will send what have been made and the rest when he has finished them. so if you are going to beamish you can save the £3.00 postage signed / recorded for delivery.

many thanks again for all your support and input as this way i can get it altered and right and makes you the customer happy.

another thing out of interest which he asked me way back in october when i started looking into this was, he said was there a gasket between badge and bonnet, i said no and thought it a bad idea as eventually in my opinion it would trap water rather than stop it. without the gasket water can freely run under it.

Great work Joseph, as an aside is there not a bad electrolytic reaction between stainless and aluminium? I have noted in the past when working on some outdoor antenna that the stainless steel screws we used to afix onto the aluminium base units became quickly corroded and could not be removed  causing much frustration.
Though I doubt this would have much affect on the bonnet badges as the interface between the 2 is a painted surface.

Hi all,
the final sample before production has been sent yesterday and will arrive all being well on wednesday for my final inspection by me before production. one final thing for you all is the three that have been sent to me have had the rolled round edge polished to a nice shine. he did this as the new old stock one sent to him, being new, but old !!!!, he thought that the edging might have tarnished i.e. it looks more of a satin or matt finish. so before production starts it can be one of three finishes SATIN, MATT or POLISHED. input on this please as i have no idea how they left the factory ( any body out there that did ) or knows for sure. i doubt even if you did work on the production line or was the one fitting them, that you would remember something as trivial as this.

I can't remember what I did yesterday, let alone over 30 years ago.........

I've got a NOS badge around somewhere, but I'm sure that will have tarnished somewhat as well.

My NOS bonnet badge that has spent it's life in a British Leyland bag since October 1974 (according to the label) has a shiny polished metal round the edge of the badge. So I vote for it being polished.

Bri.

My cracked plastic badge (still on the car) has a very bright polished rim that matchs the bright stainless on the car, so my vote is bright polished.

Hi all,
i have been asking around and some have come up with satin. this will have to be sorted by the end of next week. the final samples shall be with me next wed, thurs so i will see what polished looks like and a friend of mine has a new old stock one that has spent it's life in a bag, so will compare that. then i will give him the go ahead to go into production.

stainless is out, but all the backing plates are going to be nickel plated and only puts another £0.34p on each badge, is that ok for you all ?

joseph

p.s. many thanks again on your comments on wanting it polished, i will make the decision at the end of next week and let you know !

Certainly interesting that there may be variation from Rover production in badge edging, I have only seen the bright polished badges as origional parts though I have seen an after market badge that was available a few years ago in NZ that was somewhat different than OEM in that it appeared more like an enameled on a base metal the overal appearance was of a more goldy look to it but the outerrim of the badge was a matt gold colour.
