ANTI FREEZE

Guys

What are people using for anti freeze - there seem to be some scares about the wrong types. What are the risks and what if anything would be wrong with eg Unipart Yellow/ green long life anti freeze?

:?

Cheers

I am using Penrite Pro anti freeze/anti boil. It has a 3 year, 60,000km cycle. Long life coolants do not lose their corrosion resistance characteristics if mixed with a non long life coolant, but they do lose their long life. The combined coolant life then reverts to that of the non long life coolant that was added.

I do recall that there are some types of coolants that give problems if used in cars that are fitted with aluminium radiators,..from memory stray currents resulting in considerable corrosion and radiator failure.

I have for many years used Castrol antifreeze and corrosion additive in my cars including my 3500s. I have always changed it every two years in accordance with the instructions. I recently purchased a late model Japanese car with an aluminium radiator. They tried to sell me a premixed coolant which would last five years or 200,000 km. Which is right? I have a pit in my garage which makes oil, coolant changes and general maintenance easy as I am wary of entrusting my vehicles to garages as they promise the world but do not always do things properly

It is one or the other, which ever come first. If you only do 1000km per year, then after 5 years the coolant needs to be changed.

Sounds like an ideal situation having a pit in your garage,..so much easier to work while standing up.

The Castrol for the Rover, or any decent blue/green Glycol traditional antifreeze, changed regulary as you have been doing would be the safest option.
