Are my hubcaps wrong - V8 HUBCAPS

I have a feeling my hubcaps are wrong on my V8 (1974) M reg.
They are the turbine style. shouldnt they be the ones with the black spoke type style ?

As on the blue V8 in the gallery (series 2) at the bottom of the gallery page.
Any help please ?

OK. Yours is an S2 V8 auto? The hubcaps it would normally have left the factory with are the type with a Rover badge in the centre surrounded by a black disc. The heavily patterned (sometimes described as Rostyle although they are not) type with holes for stainles steel or chromed wheelnuts to project through were normally limited to 3500S. Of course with Rover there are always exceptions! Late European market (particularely French) 2200TC's seem to have had S trims and my impression is that at the very end of production allocation of S trims was increasingly general.

The only other variation of hub cap was on the S1's where the last of the S1's from, say, '69 got a variation on the original design with twin rings around the centre cone instead of single. Origianally I thought this a design was limited to V8's but it does seem to have been on 4 cyl cars as well. I still have a suspicion that it appeared on V8's up to a year before the 4 cyl cars.

Really interesting Chris, thanks a bunch mate.
I took the old girl into work the other day, and one of those know it all, really annoying, codgers, went over my car with a microscopic lens, surprised he didnt get his white gloves out. Normally I can respond to such interest but this #### was a complete winker. anyhow, he told me my hubs were wrong, I said that he was wrong, or that was wrong, (actually I said that was b*ll*cks) sticking my neck out but i had a hunch they were right, and he was such a...............(rant over)

So Chris, Shes a 1974 (M reg) V8, and shes got the trims with the rover badge in centre, black surrounds the badges, as you say, and I would say the outer part of the hubs resemble a turbine style. (I was told by a much nicer chap that they were designed as a turbine, cos Rover were thinking on a turbine engine for the P6) thats another story. Anyhow you reckon they are right, thats enough for me.
(So the Rostyle type you refer to, are they the ones in the gallery pic I referred to earlier ?)

Im really looking forward to the national rally. so that you guys can pick over the motor, and give me your opinions good or bad. (should be fun).

Does it really matter? Serious question, I quite like the V8S type hubcaps, which give access to the wheelnuts without removing the hubcap. I think you need special wheelnuts for these. I really like this type, and have just bought a set on Fleabay to go on my V8 auto. Am I committing some serious faux-pas by putting a set of these on a non S car? I think they are much more aesthetically pleasing than the standard type. :?:

Look on it as a performance upgrade, Police spec cars ran the "S" wheeltrims to avoid the problem of the standard ones spinning on the rims during hard braking and chopping off the valve.
Plus it will give the anoraks amongst us (me included) something else to have sleepless nights over! :)
