Auto box 1975 V8

Hi Happy days,
Surprised you haven't had a reply.
I have the BW35 I took out of my '71 3500.
I believe it is OK, done 73000 miles.
Redbarccetta sold me the car so he can confirm the condition.
Going cheap.

Jim.

IIRC 35 is a direct replacement for the 65, (providing you have the bellhousing mountings and linkage) but not quite so easy the other way around, that way you have to make the tunnel bracket for the selector cable.

It's not mine, so all I know is it has been playing up recently and yesterday it was put into gear and wouldn't move, they then tried reverse and nothing

Thanks for posting this, Happy Days!

It is concerning my car.

The fluid level is OK and always was, in fact, the fluid was just changed last week after the gearbox started to play up.
The 'old' fluid (a change was already made less than half a year ago according to the maintenance schedule specified in the manual (every 30k miles, car just had crossed the 90k mark)), looked and smelled perfectly fine, so does the 'new' fluid, that's currently in the box.

About two weeks ago the car started to slip badly going forward and make a whirring noise when the oil was hot, i.e. when you sat in stop and go traffic for a while. It still functioned well when cold though.
Now it will just creep forward ever so slightly at all, make whirring noises, but reverse still works.

So if anyone out there has a reasonably well working BW65 box kicking about, I'd deffo be interested in buying it.
Would collect within 200 odd miles around Greater Manchester.

Not quite what was said in the original posting, but things easlily get lost in the telling, so if it's lost all forward drive but still functions as it should in REVERSE, then (assuming there's no forward drive in any of the forward selector positions, not just "D") it will be a front clutch fault. The anti-bump on the 65 overcomplicates the front clutch a bit and makes them prone to failure.

It goes in reverse reasonably well, but only ever so slightly creep forward no matter which forward gear you select.

In that case if REVERSE is OK then it will be a front clutch fault.

What is your advice? Could you fix it?

If it's not working now, if it is the front clutch then the box will have to come out regardless of whether you get a used box or fix that one, so I'd remove it anyway and then have a look and see what you find. Once the box is out you need to remove the converter, bellhousing, sump, oil pipes, valve block, oil transfer pipes and front pump (in that order) to then be able to withdraw the front clutch assembly. Then remove one circlip to get at the plates, and another to remove the piston and inspect the seals. I'd do the same with the rear clutch, and inspect the bands as well. If you replace as required with new seals and gaskets it's not an overhaul but there's no reason why you should have any further problems. You just need to find someone with the piston seal installers to reseal the drums for you, but cross that bridge when you come to it. I can do those.

It can be done, see here:

Update Boys and Girls .
Up and running again .
The symptoms were , no drive in the forward gears . ( had to reverse home prior to parking up and deciding what to do )
After a diagnostic session with Harvey and him telling me my options ,i decided to go for a repair as best i could carry out myself , as oppose to a full professionally rebuilt transmission .
Anyhoo , some pictures .
gearbox001.jpg

That should be a pic of the box on the floor after me and Pa wrestling it out , heavy  :D
Then to clean it up and lay it out on the bench , By now i'm knackered !!!
gearbox002.jpg

Pulled it apart , took a few pics , easy to get lost with the pipe layout in the valve block .
gearbox003.jpg

There was plenty of evidence of failure inside the box .
Front clutch friction
gearbox010.jpg

Rear frictions and steals .
gearbox009.jpg

Front band , Totally burnt out !
gearbox014.jpg

Any hoo . Ordered up some bits ( http://www.jpat.co.uk/ )
Totally spot on guys , ( Then they do come from down here :D )
Any hoo , bits , who don't love new Stuff !!!
gearbox16.jpg

Chucked it all in , shook it all about and it works ,
( more to it than that lap top startin to shut down
Sent the front and rear clutches off the Harvey to install the piston seals ( Specialist tools required )
Got a full set of forward and backwards ,
Got to give Harvey a Massive thank you for all the help .
It's not something i'd do for fun , But it's been an amazing learning curve .

Have a go ,
Why not ?
Just nuts , bolts and some left over washers

Oh yeah .
Did the rear crank oil seal while the box was out

Looking back and hoping i removed that lump of rag from the oil pick up

Edit , Few more pics
Rear servo , cleaned out .
gearbox17.jpg

Loads of burnt friction material hidden all over the box .
Worth getting to and cleaning out as much as possible while it's apart .
The rebuilt box just before stuffing it back where it came from . At a guess i would say 150 lbs , dry .
Only a guess ,had planned to weigh it , but stuffing it back whence it came , while i had the chance took precedence .

depending on if you're in a rush i'm planning on changing mine to a zf but wont be till the new year. nothing wrong with it and you would be welcome to try it first.

Absolutely no problem with that.
Please let me know what your price idea is and when you reckon to do the conversion.
Also, where about are you located?
