Auto gearbox - Slipping in reverse!!!

Over the last couple of days i've noticed that when i accelerate in reverse there is a graunching noise coming from the rear diff and the car doesn't move backwards very fast.I've checked the gearbox fluid, thats ok,and it works fine going forward. My car is a 1970 Series 1 V8 so has the earlier gearbox, just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this!

If the noise is coming from the diff then that may be the culprit though I would have thought if it was noisy in reverse it would be noisy going forwards too.

I had this for a number of months and it got progressively worse, especially in reverse. After two trips to my mechanic (after I drew a complete blank twice), I requested a diff oil change (the whole 2 1/4 pints), they found the diff mount bolts were loose!!!! All of them!

They tightened these up and hey presto, problem solved. It is so, so, much smoother, especially stationary when going in reverse.
