Auto transmission on 71' P6

Morning all,

After sourcing the top half of the engine and building it up to a now working machine, I have now got the auto box to deal with.
This car was stood with half its engine for 30 years. With regard to the auto transmission, I filled this up to the correct amount but it seems to be very much hit and miss. Symptoms are:

I can put it in D or R, and the car might jerk slightly but does not continue. I then seem to have to rev it quite a bit (up to 3500rpm) to get it to move, and even then it may be only a slight amount. Then out of the blue it will engage better and I can reverse it.
I took it round the corner the other day and it seemed much better (accelerating, reversing etc), although I did notice that when accelerating (I was going slowly, like 30km tops), it sounded like it was changing gear, in other words revs would increase, then dip as though it changed and rise again.

The throttle linkage seems to be OK, the carbs are now pretty balanced, the mixture is better than it was. The only thing I can think of is the auto cable that is attached to the throttle linkage. When then is attached (with no open throttle), should this be a perfect fit onto the linkage (in other words should this have no tension in it, so that when the linkage is moved, the auto cable then engages)?

Any help appreciated!
Andy

If you have to rev the engine to get it to move then there probably isn't enough fluid in the box. The level must be checked with the engine running so that all the hydraulic circuits are primed and the torque convertor is full.

Unfortunately I have posted in the other post regarding the rubber bung on the dipstick (fell down the shaft!). Therefore I'm having trouble having access! Hope to sort it soon though. But thanks for the advice!

Paul,

Yes, it seems buying a 1L bottle of transmission fluid isnt enough. More like 6.8L!!! As the car has stopped for 30 years the fluid must have evaporated/just disappeared, as its empty! Now I've got to get the other 5.8L!

Thanks for the advice. Im hoping this will sort out the drive problem!

When you start driving it, you'll find that the transmission absolutely pisses out of the oil seals at both ends. Don't despair! A 5 L can of ATF in the boot and you should find that over a couple of thousand miles the seals will gradually take up.
