i have a rumbling sound from the n/s front, i thought it was the bearings so i changed them and it is still making the same noise.
after about 35mph it starts to make a dud-dud-dud sound, well thats the best i can literate!
the tyre has been changed and now the bearing as well.
i have been told it maybe a ball joint---- there is three no, four under there, please help, its getting me down......................................................................................

.............................................really down.............
i mean it.............
no i do. :(
what is the bar called that links the lower arm up to the chassis?
and how much do these joints cost to replace?

Hi Mark, One of ball joints at the top or bottom of the swivel pillars may be the cause of the noise. Best thing to do is jack the car up so the front wheels are off the ground and then try and find out where it's coming from. In my experience it's the nearside that suffers the most as it will tend get knocked about on kerbs etc. Replacement of the top ball joint isn't too bad as it's bolted onto the swivel. The bottom one is more difficult as the leg needs to be heated up so that it can be extracted. I haven't had too do this job myself but was advised by a specialist that it can be a bit of a s*d.

Seems slightly strange that the noise appears at speed. I normally find it's only apparent when driving over rough ground.

now then bennet how you doin`,
thankyou for your help.

i may have found it, the car came to me with three remoulds on it, one is mishaped, the second has a dent in it and luckily the third was rebalanced today and is ok. so ive isolated the problem. i have started to replace the two rear tyres with 175/70/14, £70 the pair fitted and balanced.
so when i get a bit of wear out of the two front remo`s i`ll change to the 175`s.
how is the estora coming along? looks good on your site.
my rover is on the back burner at the mo`.
good luck and thanks again.
Mark. ;)

could the noise be considered a droning sound?
I have this it appears to come from NS front.
Both front wheel bearing swapped
2 new good quailty tyres also - still the same
can not detect any wear/movment in any of the front suspension joints.

when I say appears - I had a similar sound on my first car, a 1972 850cc mini - except it dissapeared when turning hard left at speed - although the sound appeared to come from the front n/s ot was the rear n/s wheel bearing - no play at all passed several MOT's - once taken of car you could see wear in the outer part of the bearing... anyway back to the Rover ... where do we start?

Hi Mark,

Glad you've found the problem. Coincindentally my Mum recently spent about 3 hours waiting in a laybay for for the AA to arrive after she pulled over thinking her car was about to shake itself to bits. The AA man identified the problem as a tyre that had suddenly goine slightly oval. Strangely it was a back tyre but she described the symptom as violent shaking in the steering.

Estate progressing well at the moment and should be going to the body shop to have the top coats applied in the next week or two. I have certainly had enough of car bodywork to last me a life time! I thought the panels were pretty good but once I started them levelling them up the 30 years worth of minor dints and dings became apparent. 2 kilos of body filler in the end although most of thats on the floor or been inhaled! The chap who runs a classic car restoration shop nearby has been providing much guidance and he's just used about a dozen large tins of filler prepping an e-type body!

Once is painted I'm going to leave it for a few months otherwise I think I'll go insane!
