Banger

you lot are just plain spoilt!
We (I) must be
Fortunately, my Rover was given to me...I wouldnt take this one. :)
"Banger"=Take it out the back and shoot it!

We are quite spoilt here in Australia in terms of Rovers.

That one looks pretty crook.

Still it is very cheap and as Willy said rightly, probably rust free, certainly nothing major.

What's the big problem then? Is it the difficulty in getting hold of decent interiors in Australia? Are those missing bits of trim a bigger issue for you than they would be in the UK?
Or am I missing something more serious?

Hi Willy,

If a Rover has been parked out in the sun for a long time, then you can be sure that at the very least all of the window rubbers will be like stone. The tops of the rear seats will also be burnt. Now those in themselves are not car destroying issues, rubbers can be purchased and seats recovered. If the same car needs repainting which would be very likely, like the one in the original post, then new owner if he or she wishes to have it done properly but does not for one or more reasons wish to undertake the work themselves, then you can expect to pay in the region of $5000 or more,..say 3200 Pounds.

Then there is all the mechanical work that would require doing, again a big cost if the owner doesn't wish to do it themselves, and of course provided you can find someone who has the ability to do such work. They are there, but much less common than they used to be.

I have seen Rovers that were in far better appearance than the 'Banger' and fail to sell. Some may then be dismantled and sold for parts whilst others will be scrapped.

The average person who is looking for a car is not interested in buying an old car, least of all a Rover. I have heard it say that to buy a Rover, "you need to be an enthusiast".

Ron.

Hmm, what you're illustrating really, is that doing up a project is never cost effective compared with buying an example in good condition. I can agree with that, but many of us go ahead and do the work anyway, seeing it as part of the hobby. I just find it a bit painful to see that car dismissed so readily when most of us in the UK would leap at the chance of such an easy restoration. I could even persuade myself that it's worth shipping that one over here.
Ah well, such is life.

Absolutely....... Well put.

I have to agree with you Willy ,if that car was in the UK it would be snapped up PDQ ,it doesn't look too bad ,I have seen much worse on the bay !

I think it's a very restorable car, with all the parts readilly available here in NZ, however I completly understand the attitude that there are much better start points in terms of cars available for very little cash. You lot in the UK think that cars which here in NZ OZ a scrappy would even baulk at are good condition cars. Cars IN NZ generaly dont rust and any rust they may have is cosmetic (for p6's). If you must import a car take one from NZ they are far far cheaper than OZ cars and probably in better condition due to the number that were on the road and the availability of parts and repair expertise, the only downfall of an NZ car is on the option scale with few cars with sundym, boot kit or sunroofs.
