My base unit has vents to rear pillars with rubber 'flaps'.
Later 'donor' base unit has none.
What is their purpose as there is no obvious ' flow' possible with trim etc fitted ?
They changed to that style of ventilation for, IIRC, approx 12-18 months from about 1968. At the same time they changed the previously opening rear quarter windows to a fixed pane. They changed back to the original-style opening windows after a relatively short time.
The holes in the base unit for the vents were there from the start of production I think, I can't recall a car I've taken apart that didn't have either the holes and a blanking plate or the vent assembles. You can install them on any P6 without modification, the interior trim and exterior sail panel have a path for the air. They do work by the way.
They do seem a bit hit and miss,am breaking a 73 3500s at the moment and these vents are not present and base unit not cut out for them. They are not present on my 75 3500s either.

My car is same as your Dads - 71 series 2 - with opening rear quarter lights.
Maybe an earlier spec base unit ? - I do not have uprights on bonnet slam panel.
My dads car does not have uprights either his was registered april 71.Have also noticed that early series 2 have the welded towing eye mounts on front chassis rails to take te NADA type towing brackets which pertrude through the cut away slots in front valance. Not seen them on 72 onwards.
