BBP gets a vinyl roof..

Amazing what your boss has lying around in his attic at work :). Now i work for a motorists discount centre, and the
business has being going some 30 years. On mentioning that id like to fit a vinyl roof, with a bit of nagging and after
weeks of "oh yes im sure ive got one of those up there" from the boss he produced what remarkably was a brand new
period vinyl roof kit. Kit No2. Fit's a variety of vehicles including...Rover 2000!. What are the chances! :D

The weather was gorgeous today so i made the decision to get on with it. The car is having a full set of replacement
panels, but as the roof was ok i decided to go-ahead and fit the vinyl, thus saving me the trouble of having to paint..

Ive never fitted vinyl before..and the worse part was slopping a can of some vintage Bostik adhesive on to my not
actually that bad roof..knowing if i messed it up there was no return! :(

Im happy with the results. I managed to fit without removing the roof..trimmed carefully and tucked into the
guttering it looks very smart. The hardest part was tucking it into the rear above the window seal, but enough
adhesive made sure it shouldn't come out....Time for a pint :)

That looks excellent, it reminds me of a guy in a village I lived in who decided he knew a cheap and quick way to put a vinyl roof on his car. It was February and cold, he stuck 2 rugby boot laces on the roof with Bostic (to imitate seams), then painted it with Tetrosyl underseal. Then came a warm sunny day when he leant on the roof in his best jacket......
Every village should have an idiot, ours certainly did.

That looks very neat, and a good heavy grain as well!
Keep an eye on the edges, as you didnt take the roof off and tuck them under, they will be prone to hot weather and rain and could lift!
He doesnt have a couple of spare brown ones as well does he???

I Put enough glue on and left enough over-hang so to speak to hopefully enable that not to happen..it's all nicely tucked down inside under the front chrome trim.

Only set there im afraid :(

DId you need a helper to get it all lined up and to smooth out the bubbles?

Yes i had a mate give me a hand..did it in two halfs , folding back one side..applying glue etc then folded back
and smoothing it out..took a while but went ok.

Certainly sets your car off nicely...and looks the business.

And I'll bet it was a butterflies moment slopping the Bostik on! :)

That looks really smart. I'm almost tempted...

I note that BBP has the same problem as GF148 - front headrests that have mysteriously turned a funny beige colour.

Yeh..i wasnt sure whether there actually a totally different colour..im trying to source a replacement interior as my rear
seats are very badly gone across the tops, and the front two have splits although clean. Might try and source a later
cloth interior..thinking about black..and i need door cards as well due to some past owner cutting holes for speakers :(

That looks wicked. I have a pair of black 'Teardrop' headrests if you're interested. They're decorating my upstairs hall at the moment :)

I've never seen a new vinyl roof and i really think that looks so classy!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys..its one of those jobs i want sure about..the worse bit was
applying the first few bits of glue..no turning back & all that. But its turned out well :D

Later this month..full respray... I have all the panels off my donor SC which i will be working on, painting
and swapping over like for like. Will hopefully look stunning once it's got some new clothes on so to speak.
I just hope i dont find anything too nasty once i start taking the panels off! :)

Anyone thought of doing the roof in that vinyl stuff that ute owners spray into and over the back of their utes .
Surface Technology has changed over the years
Certainly looks like vinyl and would be tough as old boots .
Maybe don't apply at the same thickness as for a commercial vehicle. It's not that one is likely to carry a dog on the roof, let alone a 44gal drum of oil.
Am also assuming it would be far easier to apply than glueing down a sheet of vinyl and fitting same under water channels and windscreen rubber.
A Vinyl roof was all the rage in the 70's down here.
Having said that BBP does look vey smart in her new hat
May be a vinyl roof looks better on some colours . Black on white is one good blend.
A vinyl roof would be extremely hot in Oz ,NZ or SA without a/c.
Try wearing a black beanie on a sunny day

I was just being facetious - I figured they must have been acquired from somewhere! As long as I've owned GF148 it has had beige teardrops to go with its tan (what's the proper Rover name for this colour interior?) seats. I plan to soon get around to finally having them sorted out so they match.

Sparky has black cloth seats, which are coming out for the leather ones I have in stock. Let me know if you want them.

Keeping the door skins though.

I thought he came from Bournemouth, and I have a company in Ringwood that I could ship them too fairly cheaply.
